    After Chief Interview...

    Hello Everyone,

I am new here.. Think I have posted just once. Read a lot though.

I've done the physical/written exam, background check, oral board and yesterday I had my interview with the chief.

I believe we started with around 80 people, they told me they were down to 30 at the time of oral board interviews. There are 4 open spots. My interview yesterday really didn't feel like an interview, more so just the chief telling me how they operate and making sure I knew what I was getting myself into. He only asked me a couple of questions. He told me that since I passed the oral board that they must have liked me and he didn't want to ask the same questions over again. Everything felt very positive from him. I wasn't really getting any negative vibes. He asked me if I had any questions. I just asked a few about women, I am a female, and if there were any situations that were tougher on them that I should be aware of. That type of stuff.

Anyways, I've applied at two other places so far, obviously not hired. What should I expect next? They are in a hurry and he told me I should hear something by tomorrow. They are making the decisions for people that need training as quickly as possible.

Any comments are greatly appreciated as I am very new to the process. Does it seem like I have a good chance? It's all just happening so very quickly. Thanks greatly in advance.

Sounds like you are in the running. A chief's time is valuable and they won't waste it on someone they are not interested in.

Good luck and try to be patient.
This career is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

Just wait for tomorrow and hopefully they will call you with some good news. That is kind of how my interview with the chief went. And here I am. You have obviously set yourself up as a very good candidate.

If they said tomorrow, expect the call. Let us know.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Keeping fingers, toes, ears, arms and legs crossed, if that is at all possible.

My Chief's interview was pretty much the same, except he basically asked me if I wanted the job, I said, "yes sir." And that was that. I would suspect you'll probably get offered a position......good luck.

Many civil service agencies have something called the Rule of Three. It allows them to fill a single vacancy with anyone from the highest three scores on the civil service test. If there are four vacancies, under the Rule of Three they can select anyone from the top seven scores on the civil service test.

The purpose of the Chief's interview is usually to determine which of those candidates will be selected under the Rule of Three. In short, the Chief spends time with each candidate, gets a feel for them and tries to figure out which would be the best fit for the department. Those who are not selected remain on the hiring list and must be considered as top scorers for the next vacancy.

Not yet! At the end of our meeting he said it could possibly be Friday. I was just being hopeful for today. I am about to bounce out of my chair though. This is darn nearing torturous.

I practically have my phone glued to my face.

    It has its uses.

Years back we had an applicant who scored high in the testing process but who was also a rapist. There was no doubt that he did it. However, he was never convicted because the PD that arrested him did not have a warrant when they seized his clothing from his apartment. That clothing contained fluids and other evidence connecting him to the rape. At the time, state law prohibited an employer from refusing to hire someone based on an arrest that did not result in a conviction. Based on that law, the State Personnel Board ruled that we could not consider the rape as grounds for DQ in the background.

There was little else in his background to justify a DQ. The only tool we had left was to continually bypass him for other applicants using the Rule of Three.

I still haven't received a call.. Chief said thursday, at the latest friday.. What should I expect? For sure a call today? Wait to call Monday? He seemed pretty serious so I'm thrown for a loop. Am I just being impatient? I think it's the thousand people today that have asked me if I've heard anything yet that are starting to discourage me.

You make a very good point So, it's 3:24 right now. Should I call 15 before 5:00 if I haven't heard? Reason it is so important is.. Monday is 2 weeks before the academy. He was needing to make a decision quickly to let us know since it is coming up so fast. So, I'd like to give my current job 2 weeks if I do go forward.

Still never got a call.. 4:45 and I found out the Chief left for the day.. Not sure what to make of it besides the fact it's very, very discouraging.
