Questions about my background, can someone help before I begin?

As a teenager, I was involved with pot, I got in trouble for being involved in egging a teammates car, even though I didn't throw eggs (my friends whom I was with did the egging). When I got into college, at about 19 yrs old, I got an underage drinking, and a DUI when I was 24. Since then I have joined the Military, served 2 tours to Iraq, have a family, work for the Forest Service as a Wild land Firefighter, and pretty much have tried to be one of the best citizens I can possibly be. I have not received a ticket since my DUI, and that was the biggest mistake of my life. I am now 28, going on 29. Will my past disqualify me from passing the back ground and poly test?

None of what you've posted about your background has anything to do with passing the polygraph. The basis for that test is that you tell the truth about your background, REGARDLESS of what you've done or not done.

As to whether you'll pass a background, nobody here has a crystal ball and can see into the future. "Involved with pot" is intentionally vague on your part, and the egging and DUI will be strikes against you. In law enforcement hiring, your positives do not count. They don't somehow outweigh or mitigate the negatives. They simply are there. If an astronaut, eagle scout, Marine with a PhD and a Medal of Honor has something in their past to disqualify them, then THEY ARE DISQUALIFIED, regardless of the good that they've done. No, it's not fair, but it's the way it is.

From the bare basics you posted, you may meet the minimum qualifications.

You'll only know if you try. The sins of your youth though aren't going to help.

Congratulations on turning your life around and I mean that. But even with 4 years of clean living, you have a lot of overcome. I suspect you're going to have to apply to a lot of depts if you have much of a chance of finding one willing to give you an opportunity. That much pot smoking, even as a teenager and the DUI can be killers alone. Combined, I don't have much hope for you.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine
