Hello,
I'm hoping I could get some insight from anyone who has done or does background checks. Here's my situation. I'm 29 and am about to graduate with my AS in criminal justice. I'd like very much to get into law enforcement but I'm concerned with some issues from my past:
6/1999-Pled guilty to theft and underage consumption. Theft was several friends and I using the trunk of car to move construction warning signs that were in a pile on side of the road, up about two blocks and placing into a friends driveway as a joke.
6/2000- Leaving scene of accident. Friends were arguing outside my car in his back yard. Saw police coming from about a half mile away. Everyone got back in the car and I started to drive down the road to get back to his driveway. Friend panicked and hit my gas pedal. I Tried to pull it into his drive way a block away but hit his tree. I Hid inside his house with him. Turned my self into local police shortly thereafter and was issued citation, no arrest.
7/2001-Underage drink and drive... .02 but in MN is zero tolerance for under 21.
2/2003-Careless driving
I'm just looking for someone to give me their honest opinion on my chances of passing a background check. I know because of the theft conviction, that is an automatic DQ for the state I live in, MN, so I'll have to look elsewhere.
Would background investigators take into account the circumstances, like with the theft charge for example, (that is was a stupid prank) and also the time that has passed since the offense? I've had a clean driving record for 7 years and by the time I finally graduate with my Bachelors degree it will have been like 12-15 years since these events. I've been steadily employed with the same company now for 10 years.
Please refrain from comments about how I should have known better if I was going into LE. I'm very ashamed of the stupid mistakes I made between 18-22. The truth is, I didn't discover that I wanted to do it until I was about 25. I'm just curious on what folks who may do BI's think. I'm planning on continuing on with Bachelors degree and I know there is much more I could do with it than just LE, but that's where my heart is.
Thanks in advance,
Andy
