    Tx dps 2010

I think it is way past time to start a thread for the upcoming 2010?? Academy. Since there is a multitude of rumors and conjecture, I think it would be helpful to get what is happening out there so other applicant's and hopefuls can get all the latest at one location. Obviously, I have researched everything about upcoming DPS as I am trying to move back to TX from out-of-state, and getting things ready won't be easy at all. Plus I'm anxious to be on my way.

Currently, I know there is a holdup due to the barracks question and them not meeting fire codes. The current academy is being housed off campus, but I'm guessing they don't want to do that again. I have heard that there will be some kind of Commission on Dec. 11th that will start trying to make a decision on what to do.

There was a March 2010 Short school scheduled, but it was put on hold because of the barracks issue (I'm guessing). Confusingly, a story was in the news on Dec. 1st still citing March 28th as the date for this class. I've heard the 2nd class of the year would be in July, but now that seems to be up in the air as well. A week or so ago, the main recruitment page now just shows 'Now accepting applications for an upcoming academy in 2010'.

If anyone hears anything more, please speak up!

I am also in the process for the upcoming academy, i have heard nothing about this postponement except for on this forum. The process was temporarily postponed about a month ago because the new director wanted to move the polygraph further forward, i took my polygraph last monday. My recruiter told me everything was back on track about three weeks ago. I passed my polygraph, I am currently waiting to hear when my oral board will be scheduled. My thoughts are if the academy is postponed the process would once again be postponed. Unless they are willing to finish the process on time with the academy postponed, and pay the completed recruits as interns for longer. Just a thought, I am not saying by any means that the people saying it is postponed are being untruthful. I am just saying what I know, and what I think and conclude from what I have experienced so far.

At least the process is moving again, and confirmed. My process was stopped due to the poly move up. My background was started, and I met with the Trooper investigating, then got a call a day later that I would have to do the poly first. Maybe, the continued delay is because of my being out of state.

Thanks for the update, and good luck with the process!

In March 2010 The short academy was to start, and in July the regular academy was to start.

We've heard that the Short Academy was going to be put on hold due to a lack of applicants and that the dormitories would be locked down until sometime at the end of next year. As of right now all in-service troopers are with us at the same hotel.

I don't anticipate an academy being started until this time next year, and I personally don't feel that they would have too much of a problem getting people hired on already in the hopes that if something does go there way regarding the dorm situation that they would have all the recruits they need.

I have considered the Internship that is offered. Since you are in the academy, would you recommend it? Do you know if they get you started on some training..etc? I have heard that it involves different divisions of the DPS, which would be good to experience, (and remember when the pain starts). Is there any other benefits that you can think of?

Sorry for all the questions, but the intel is invaluable for those trying to make decisions.

    Latest Update

Just found out straight from Austin that they are putting all pending applications on hold. They are expecting to not have an academy this calendar year (running through Sep 2010). I was told that they would post a new date on the web site once they know it for sure. Then 6-7 months before the academy starts, they will start up the process again.

Bummer! I was really wanting to get to TX ASAP. I'm going to ponder my options...

How did you hear this? A letter, phone call? I haven't gotten anything and I am in Texas... From what I have gathered they were going to wait until the first of the year to start board interviews.

It's true. I am in the current academy. I was told yesterday by some of the Sergeants that there won't be an Academy in 2010. I believe that they said aout having an Academy in January of 2011, but I'm not for sure. Good luck with the process. PM me if you have any questions.

If the internship is offered to you take it. It really is beneficial. You learn a lot of things that will help you in the academy (when there is one), help you on the job when you get out and the internship also helps you with making contacts. Meeting other Troops, Sergeants, etc from different areas is always a good idea.

I have heard that there won't be any academy offered next year, but just the 10-week school for prior LE. You might ask about that. I heard yesterday that the 10-week school is back on.

They may just hire interns until they decide when the next academy will be. If so, I say do it. Be an intern. You will be much better prepared for the academy plus you will have those Troops give you tips etc.

Sorry, I haven't been on in a few days as the holidays have us running around. I called and spoke with the recruiting people in Austin. Go straight to the horses mouth so-to-speak. They said they were winding everything down and putting the applications on hold. I was told to keep an eye on the main web site and the date would be updated as soon as they have a solid one for the main school. Then everything would start up again 6-7 months before the next academy starts up.

Sadly, my certification in Texas and NC have both lapsed, and I don't believe I am eligible for the short school..saying they do go ahead and have one. As I am not far enough along in the process, I don't think I will have the option to do the internship until later on.

Right now, I am trying to figure out what exactly I am going to do. Waiting an additional year wasn't in my plans. I guess I wait for developments like everyone else.

    Unhappy

The latest and greatest from the All Knowing Grape Vine is that the academy has been pushed back to January 2011 and that is a big maybe. I have been very tempted to start applying to other agencies, but I'm still strongly considering just riding out the time by doing schooling and a lot of PT while waiting for the process to start back up. I am hard headed!

So save money, grow stronger and smarter is the order of the day. Anyone with some scuttlebutt, please pipe up. The long wait has begun.

Still waiting.... I'm wondering if any others who have applied have gone after other departments due to the long DPS wait.

These days, I'm getting my affairs in order (for the NC to TX move), train and generally try to stay busy to not think of the time before things start up again. I'm hoping that things get going in the Summer so I can maybe do an Internship so I can go ahead with the move.

Everything is still up in the air. New intel from Austin is that they are going to try and refurbish the old academy buildings instead of building all new ones. They are waiting on a date of completion in order to set the next academy date.

I also hear that they are considering offering counties when you apply. For those of us already having to move, I hope this is the case. One thing is for certain is that the rumor mill is alive and well!

Anyone with more info, please sound off!

Well just to let everyone one know that is waiting for the next academy all your questions have been answered. My recruiter call me this morning and told me that the next academy is set for June of this year. He told me to go ahead and turn in my applications to start the process. To anyone that has been waiting good luck and keep us updated.
