I guess that since my family is coming with me when I go, it will depend on if we get lucky and they offer duty station when hiring. That would be great so I can just move my family to a spot instead of having to do two moves.

Only time can tell. I'm considering just dumping all of my stuff at my house and moving as minimally as possible and starting over.

it would save alot of time and money if i got they let us pick before the acedemy, cuz as of right now my wife and daughter are gonna get a apt in round rock then after the acedemy we will just move again but if we could pick in the beginning that would save time and money.

Alot of people here have contacts. I don't think they are a problem. You just can't wear them during OC Spray Fun Day

Just be sure that if you come from out of State, especailly with a family, that you get your mind right. We had people dropping like flies for the first 3 weeks. We are going through alot of adversity right now, but we all kno that it will only make us stronger in the end. Try to be sure your attitude is on the same level.

The 'not knowing' if the hardest thing about the hiring process, but stay positive.

Thanks for throwing in your 2 cents!

I get you on the having your mind right. I knew years ago when I took a job at a city PD that I wanted to work for DPS. However it wasn't convenient. I am past all of that and now don't care if it is convenient or not. This is a one way move for me. USMC Boot Camp couldn't run me off, and there are few more hard headed than me when I get it in my head to do something. I've never failed at what I have set out to do.

I'm hearing a rumor running that guaranteed duty station could be offered at the 18 week academy. Still hoping for this one!

Why Round Rock? My wife is looking all over Texas trying to figure where she wants to go. The deal is, I get Texas, and she picks on what I want to aim for. Another reason that I like DPS over City Police is that if you get somewhere that just sucks, you can up and transfer.

round rock is a suburb north of austin. what if she moves to houston(where im from and where i wanna go after) and i drive to see them every weekend(2 hour drive) and after the acedemy they sent me to bfe texas she will just have to move anyways. so thats alot of wear and tear on my car(driving home every weekend). round rock is i think just north of austin and looks like nice area and the drive is short. but it really depends if they let us out of state people pick when we get hired.

zack91- their gonna have to boot me out lol i know if u quit before so many weeks u owe them 9000 something for the fees and stuff. i cant afford to quit. lol but i want my family near by for support(even if we have each other). i know the first few weeks are hell and are a blurr. but like i said before i cant afford to quit. unless i get hurt im not gonna stop giving 100%

I'm from Houston re as well. It is sooooooooooo worth the drive to go see the family for the short weekend. Truly is. You only owe the DPS if you get commissioned(a.k.a. Graduate) then quit because you don't like the station or whatever. It's all about heart and perseverence here.

Has anyone heard different on the Fitness test? A recruiter told me that their going back to how they use to do it. The 1.5 mile is the only timed test. However my recruiter that has been helping me out with the process said that the 1.5 mile and sit-ups are timed. I have heard two different things. I just wanted to see what yall guys have heard.

I don't think it would. You would have to talk to a recruiter. We didn't get our districts until week 19. The thing is that you have to live within 30 air miles of your duty station. People from our class had to relocate, some were even married with kids.

Everything I am getting says that the PT test (for application) is pass/fail. the run is timed, but just to make sure you don't walk part of it.

I'm way past that. I'm trying to build up to academy fitness so that I don't die and can worry with the book work vs worrying about my failing body.

Regarding moving, I have decided to plan for the worst, and hope to be pleasantly surprised. I'm going to anticipate having to move a couple of times. Hopefully, the dust will settle over the weekend and they (DPS) will have what they are going to do in place and firmed up as far as the process goes.

Anyone hear if the Internship is still only 7 weeks long? If I get the job offer, I don't know if I would be able to leave Texas again! There really is something great about that State!

Is the high number of vacancies effecting active Troopers?

I don't like to speculate, so here is an interesting article regarding the DPS job vacancies (reported at about 400) and funds running out for the border security stuff.

Department of Public Stimulus | The Texas Tribune

Personally, I like to see that they are making things work with what they have vs. spend and forget policy that has many states reverting back to gravel roads.

With that many vacancies, I wonder if the Troopers feel it out on the road, or by the nature of their job (not many calls) is it business as usual.

Thanks for the input! Can you give me any pros/cons/ preferences about working in a rural county vs working a major city area (Dallas, Houston) in DPS?
I know it is a long shot to be able to get what I want, it would greatly help what I would put on the dream sheet.
