    Academy Cut backs

Is everyone seeing cutback in Academies? I know the 3 agencies that I am applied with here and have been in process with for a year have just announced that the previously scheduled academies have been postponed....without a new date in mind.
I know budget cutbacks have put a serious damper on new recruits...but I was just curious if this is across the board or just here in VA.

Just kind of sucks to make it to the final handful of candidates and then have no certain date in mind. Kind of makes planning for the family and closing down my business a bit unnerving.

    It's like that everywhere.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

In California no one is ever on the same page. We have some agencies here that are laying off and others that are hiring. A lot of it depends on grant money. Some departments here run their own in house academies, but most use the Community College’s. The Community College in my area runs their academy with help from two local agencies, because these agencies are both looking at lay offs, the academy is being closed.

Well, Mr. Snooty-Patooty. If you would reconsider adding Richmond city to your assortment of "desired departments", we may consider you good enough to join into a scheduled academy...

NYPD has had about 200-300 in the last few academies. They have had classes as big as 2000 before. There is also talk of no january 2010 class. NYPD is the biggest police department in the country, if not the world.

From what I have heard from Cincinnati Police Officers that I worked with in the past, future Cincinnati Police Academies have been withdrawn from the schedule, the BI's have been moved to other assignments and the City of Cincinnati is currently talking of laying off approximately 50 to 100 Officers.

Hanover is waiting for the gov. to come in with the budget. Postponed Jan academy, but hope to know in the next few weeks.
Chesterfield Postponed Feb Academy and waiting budget to schedule next one.
Henrico was scheduled for a March Acad, but I believe it's June now.

They have all been great about communicating along the way and calling to let me know they havn;t forgotten about me and my family and wished us a happy Turkey day...so hopefully we'll know soon.

Where I end up will be a career I do for the next 30 years, and we've done our time in the city I don;t believe the city has the next acad scheduled yet...do they?

In the midst of frustration while waiting, it is good to know that in such a competitive time to apply for this job that I seemed to be a good fit.
Most of my worries are about selling my business in time for the academy but not too soon that I have no money coming in.

It is a strange situation indeed. When looking to get back into Law Enforcement, I was considering NC SHP (where I live now) and returning to TX DPS (where I prefer to be). Both have postponed academies for different reasons, but NC sums it up best for everywhere I have looked. They need people badly, but the state is in denial and broke.

There is one academy set for next year, but the state owes a ton of money and I heard that they recently did some cutting on the current Troopers salary. It isn't confirmed, but wouldn't be surprising.

That leaves Texas which at least seems to have their financial act together much better than most places. However, they have had this huge thing with buildings aggravating the fire marshal...WHICH IS DELAYING CLASSES!!!

My experience in law enforcement tells me that the police, fire and EMS are always the first to be cut in slow times. This is crazy as that is when you need them all the more. Priorities people! PRIORITIES!

**DISCLAIMER** I'm not a current LEO, but have six years experience with two city PD's in NC and TX as a sworn officer. I'm in the process of returning to LEO work ASAP.

It's roughly the same here in the midwest (Illinois and Indiana to be specific) as well. Many of the major departments are on hiring freezes and if any are hiring at all, they have only 2 or 3 positions open and a hundred people (who may be just as qualified if not more so than I am) apply for them. To add insult to injury, the state of Illinois is a completely broke, corrupt, horribly run, and generally dysfunctional trainwreck at this point in time. Seriously, it's a tough race between California and Illinois as to which state is more bankrupt. So as a result, the state police are on a hiring freeze as well. The bottom line is that the job market for any sort of public safety field is horrible all over the country.

Actually, the academy is set for January 19th and I am counting the days!

Funny, you lived in the city and want to work for Henrico and I live in Henrico and want to work for the city... I didn't apply to Henrico as I see the city as having a better philosophy and more growth potential in so many different ways than any of the surrounding counties. However, I wouldn't scoff at an offer from any of them, it is just my opinion that the city will be the best for for me.

I hope you aren't stuck in limbo too long, that has got to suck. Having no definitive time frame is the worst thing out of the process that I encountered. I'd rather have a 100 of those psyc tests than go one more day of not having a clue!

Good luck to you and the family, I hope the wait doesn't last much longer!

Not knowing ANYTHING is absolutely the worst! That is where I'm drifting right now...

Our academy was cancelled, and I don't look for us to have one for the next 2-3 years if were lucky. Right now were just trying to keep from laying off the officer that we do have from the last academy. Really sucks because were working with numbers from the 1960's right now. Add in retirements for the next couple of years and were in a world of hurt!
Excuse me Officer, I have a stupid Question. "No problem, I've got a stupid answer for you!"

If the NYPD continued to hire the way they have, I would have been in the July 09 class, but now it seems that, if I'm lucky, I'll end up in the July 2010 class.

Some_God, if you don't get into the next class, send me your resume. I can offer you a position at my academy.

Also you can contact my Security Chief.
