Got in trouble with the law when I was young.

I'm 27 and going to get my degree in criminal justice. The only thing is I got arrested 2 times when I was 20. I got a DUI and posession of 1.5 grams of marajuana on my twentieth birthday. The DUI happened 4 months later. I havnt had trouble with law since, and I'm hoping this doesn't make it impossible for me to become a police officer.

    Impossible? Not necessarily.

    Difficult? Absolutely.

Law Enforcement Positions are competitive in nature. Even if you meet the minimum standards, you may not be hired if the other people in the process are better qualified than you. It is a certainty that most people applying will not have that kind of problem in their background, so you will have to do something on the positive side to set yourself apart from the pack.

Also, what does your drug use look like in your past? That will also be another potential problem for you.

Obviously I smoked marijuana but I havnt i'd say 4 five years. How would they be able to find out how much I smoked or what drugs I did in my past. How far do they get with the lie detector

The fact you have to ask that question throws doubt on your integrity. Integrity is a must for a career field where your sworn word can strip people of their freedoms.

You will need to be absolutely honest and they will get as far as they need to with the polygraph. The fact that you're even asking is a red flag. You need to find another career.

Because it shows responsibility or lack thereof. If you don't like the rules of the process, you'd better get out now. The rules and regulations only pile on once you're hired - IF you even make it that far.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

They'll find out even without the polygraph. It's called a "Background Investigation" and we wouldn't be any good at it if we just took everyone at their word, would we?

Lying would be a permanent DQ, so don't bother. As previously mentioned, the fact that you seem to be considering it means that I wouldn't want to work with you.

And Credit History is a big deal because it shows how responsible you are with money. If you got downsized or laid off, you will have a chance to explain that, but if you just went hogwild with credit cards, you'll have to explain that, too.

The more posts you make, the smaller I think your chances are...

Is anyone here a background investigator or in police hiring? where do these people come from? i seriously don't get it? he doesn't have a LE degree, and he's going to go out and get a degree which only helps him in a field for which he's basically already opted out of because he can't follow the laws which he someday dreams to enforce?
and not just a DUI but an under 21 DUI.
this is a serious question for the background guys, do we really have people like this applying or is it just this board?
unfortunately off the street, but working on a 2-Year CJ Degree (40% Finished).

Yea though I walk through the valley of no radio reception, with backup in excess of 40 miles away I shall fear no evil, for I am a warrior, for whom the ranchers have an affinity, and they can take the head off a gopher at 200 yards.
