    My application with the police

Well folks, I don't come around here too often anymore, but I figured I would create a thread here for a few reasons. I'll get to that in a minute.

But just for background purposes, I applied to the police service up here this past August, and was deferred today for a period of two years. There are a variety of reasons why this happened, I'm not going to get into them here, but needless to say I was pretty disappointed.

I first came to this website the day I decided I wanted to be a police officer. We're talking about 6.5 years ago. I was going to school at the time, and this was the first website I signed up for when I made the choice of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Why I took so long to apply is haunting me now, but there were reasons for it. Anyways, after waiting so long, I received the bad news today.

My reasons for creating this thread are not to ask for sympathy. I am doing this because I want to thank each and every one of you who gave me support, answered my questions, and were just genuinely my friends over these past number of years. This website is a huge resource to those of us wanting to become police officers, and without a place like this, I suspect that many current police officers wouldn't even be where they are today. The fact that you police officers are here willing to offer advice and whatnot to potential applicants does not go unnoticed. It is truly appreciated, even though it isn't always stated.

So thanks. As for myself, I don't know what I'm going to do at this time. I need to carefully look at my life and myself, and decide how to proceed with things. Sometimes life throws you a curve-ball, and it's up to me to react in the proper way.

Just curious, why a two year deferment?

I probably will Darin, it's just a bit different up here than it is in the US. In my city on close to one million, there is really only one police service. This is where my heart has always been, I've been around this service since I was a kid, and to get the news it was pretty crushing and disheartening.

However, there are other options within the province that I am going to look into. I can't sit back and wait two years while doing the same things I've been doing. Time to move on.

    Met,

The scuttle butt (among police officer's) in Western Canada is that Medicine Hat PD is the best PD in Canada to work for. The pay is the same as Calgary PD, and cost of living is very good. Thier equipment and training is second to none.
I have been on several courses of late with Med Hat members, they all came over from CPD, and RCMP.
If memory serves me, your test mark with the Alberta PD you applied for, is good for all Alberta PD's except the RC....

    Something to think about....

Thanks oscar, I appreciate the sentiments.

Bryan, thanks for the info. I think my written exams are good anywhere in the province, you are right. I thought my fitness test results would be as well, but Alberta as a whole is changing their fitness test to standardize the province. Not a big deal if I do apply. I have to make my decision up rather quickly though, as things like my vision report which costs good money, does have a time limit on it.
