    Meeting With Chief

I applied several weeks ago at a local PD. About two weeks later, I had finished the physical agility test, written exam, poly, board interview, and background. I was then placed on the waiting list.

Yesterday, I was informed that I have a upcoming "meeting" with the Chief. The PD where I applied has about 400 sworn officers. The hiring process does not include a meeting with the Chief (per the PD's website as it pertains to the hiring process).

I do not know what to make of this upcoming meeting. The next step is a conditional offer followed by a psychological eval, drug test, and physical.

    Congratulations???
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

That is what I am thinking, but here is the deal. Someone else I tested with on the same day received a phone call (I received an e-mail) yesterday informing him of the conditional offer to take the psyc eval, drug test, and physical. He does not have a meeting with the Chief. He is coming down to take the psyc, drug test, and physical.

He does live about 700 miles away whereas I live ten minutes away from the PD. We both scored the same on our written test and have similar backgrounds.

I don't see why I received an e-mail regarding an e-mail and he received a phone call with a conditional offer. I really don't think the a Chief of a large department would waste his time on a meeting if there was a serious problem. The next two weeks are going to drive me crazy!

It's probably just for the waterboarding phase of the hiring process.

Sleep well, eat well, wear a snazzy suit, call the chief Sir/Ma'am, and roll with whatever happens.

In civil service agencies, hiring is usually based on test scores. Highest score gets appointed first, next highest score gets appointed second, third highest score, etc.

However, most agencies also have something called the Rule of Three. It allows the appointing authority (often the Chief) to fill an appointment from any candidate within the top three scores. When a vacancy occurs, it is not unusual for the Chief to meet with the top three scores on the list for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, get a feel for them and decide which one he is most comfortable with. That's the one who gets hired.

The other two go back on the list and must be considered as part of the top three candidates for the next vacancy.

If that is the case here, be prepared to make the best impression.

I believe I was tied with one other person for the highest test score.

I think the Chief wants to make sure that I am committed to joining the force before he hires me considering I have an advanced degree and because I have applied to other agencies. This department is really adamant about being dedicated to working there.

If he's a good Chief he will want to talk to you. Congratulations! Be Safe.

Did your entire process only take a few weeks? Sounds really quick compared to what I've been doing for the last year...but have fun with the chief!
