    Unhappy Whoops...I messed up

Well, tonight Myself and some friends here at college decided to go sledding outside of town. We rolled up to the parking lot and starting making our way up, and someone said, that they used to use garbage can lids when they were kids. There was a house right next to the parking lot, and they had some garbage cans on their back porch. Me, being the moron, says, I'll go get one. We had full intentions of returning it when we were done. (Like it matters). I get the lid, and we make our way to the hill. As soon as we get to the bottom, i see a car in the distance parked behind mine. I knew it was an officer. I go back down there, and sure enough it is. The man who owned the house apparently heard us and called them. Long story short, sat in the back of the squad car for about 30 mins, before they decide to write me an appearance ticket for "prowling", a misdemeanor in Michigan.
The complaintant only said, "you better find another career choice, you will never be an officer now..." I only have 1 yr left...
Im not looking for sunshine messages, only honest ones. Please help with your best advice. I need it :(

    Thanks everyone....

    Jason

My sympathies. Not being an officer, I'm of no help.

Good luck though...I'm sure there are officers who have been caught doing worse though....I would think so at least.

I've got a misdomenor (criminal tresspass) I'm in college....less then a year left....

I'm going to get it expunged. And apply to departments. Degrees help alot. And I will be completely honest with the departements I apply too. I still have a chance. You may have to wait a year to get it expunged though.

Wait for LEO's to reply also.
one more semester, then the degree.....then off to find a job where you get to drive the cars with flashing lights, that go woo, woo....:)

I just posted a pretty lengthy reply in the following thread. I would believe that it would apply to you, as well as any other applicant applying for a position.

    http://forums.realpolice.net/showthr...?t=9057&page=3

Remember, it is only a ticket as of right now. I highly recommend to go see the judge and see what s/he says. If this is your first offense of anything, I can easily see it being reduced to something else. Around here, judges reduce misdemeanors to ordinance violations all the time. Ordinance violations are not crimes in Wisconsin, and can be more helpful if that occurs. Definetly see the judge, be completely honest and respectful, and give a quick background of what you want do with your life (law enforcement, rock and roll singer, LE forum moderator, etc).

Good luck. Stay out of trouble and think next time!

I don't know. I am trying to figure out what to do. I will probably talk to the prosecutor on my court date, and see what we can do. Worse Case Scenario, I'll have to use my YTA. I just dont know how this will affect getting a job. Maybe theyll just look at this story, and think it was stupid. I Mean a garbage can lid to go sledding...come on!?

Yeah but..."How old are you?" "Knowingly going into LE you did this?" Those are the first things that come to mind...I would try to get it settled out. Talk with the Officer if you can. Explain it to him. He will be more able to help you.

He can make a recomendation to the Judge. Unless, I have misunderstood you. Did you get a ticket or did you get arrested? If you got the ticket then the Officer gave you that ticket...And he can help. If this was an arrest well then yeah hopefully the prosecutor can help.

It is an appearance ticket. No cuffs, no jail, but it was a misdemeanor, so technically, an arrest...
I have a few options I am juggling right now, Ill keep you informed, I am just kind of concerned on what a BI would think of this. Yah a stupid thing to do, and embarassing, but no alcohol involved, just clean fun and we happened to make a poor decision. At the time, we didnt think using someones garbage can lid would cause all of this....

Yeah I would go to the officer then. I was gonna tell you this story before but I suppose I will now. I know a girl, I guess you could call her a family member, (I am of no blood relation) who recieved an MIP...No Good. By her going to an officer, having an officer go with her to court, some strings were pulled. The officer was able to work with the prosecutor to come to a good bargain. The prosecutor was able to take into consideration that this was her first offense (less traffic). So I guess I would go to both and plead your case.

Kind of curious how you got a prowling ticket, and maybe not a theft or even disorderly conduct. Was the garbage cans in the backyard where you had to go prowling around to get it? I was not the officer there, but just curious.

I would assume be honest with whom ever you deal with. Did the cop say that or someone else? (that you should look for a new career?)
