    Collin County LE Academy in Texas

    Afternoon. I start the academy at Collin County in McKinney, TX on Monday, Oct. 26. Pretty psyched. I was just curious if anyone who follows the board has any additional feedback, positive or negative, regarding the academy.

    Thanks in advance.

    First off, congratulations on making it through a difficult hiring process and earning a spot in a Police Academy. Now for your question...I am currently in an academy in the Northeast. I am in week 17 of 28, so I think I have a few useful tips for you. First, keep your mouth shut and your ears open. There is a reason that God gave you one mouth and two ears and that's so you can listen twice as much as you talk. Take NOTHING personal. At least in my experience, my whole class was yelled at for the first couple weeks for nothing. They need to break you down mentally and build you up. It's a game in a sense, but a game with great order and purpose. The Drill Instructors aren't picking on anyone. Just remember that no matter WHAT they say, they are RIGHT and you are WRONG. After the breaking down stage, you will understand why they do everything. The DIs that I have don't do anything just for kicks, everything has a purpose. Just keep moving, PAY ATTENTION, and again, keep your mouth shut. Make sure you always lock your locker, keep a close eye on your battle buddies(academy classmates), and forget about individualism. The quicker you and your classmates show unity and teamwork, the quicker the DIs will be off your back. Good luck, it's the best adventure you'll ever have. You WILL think about quitting, but don't give up. The prize at the end of the path is well worth the small struggles of the academy. Remember that when the Drill Instructors are hard on you, it's because they are training you to back up them and their friends. They have to trust you with their lives someday, so they have a right to be picky about everything. Enjoy it and stay strong....

    And I hope you like doing pushups...you'll be kissing the floor quite a bit the next few weeks if my gut feeling is correct

    Good luck!

    Chaos -- Thanks for the feedback. I'd like to think that I've done a good job of preparing myself on a lot of levels for the academy. Although, as you can attest to, it's a lot different once you're there. Thanks again for the feedback though. And thanks for the congrats. I'll definitely work hard.

    Investigator -- It's the CCLEA on the Collin County Community College's Central Park Campus in McKinney. It's not for the CCSO.

    I ask only so we can better understand the type of academy;

    You are paying your own way and have not yet been hired by an agency, correct?

    I have no experience with CCLEA, but those tend to go either way. I know some guys who went thru a different one, and they had lite PT. Some other self paids will run you till you puke.
