    Polygraph for LAPD

I just got out of my poly exam today. The woman administering the poly exam came in after grading the test and said that I did not pass and wanted to know if there is anything I need to tell her. I said no and explained that I told the truth. I explained that I was confused because I told the truth and she is saying that I did not pass. She said that she will send the files to the admin office for them to review. She never explained to me which question(s) I had trouble with so I do not know where (or if) I went wrong.

Is this a 100% indicator that I failed or did she just try to get me to confess? I am confused. Help!

Has anyone heard the same comment then find out that they passed.

    Wait for what?

A well researched, yet differing opinion?

They do try to get you to confess at times, Possibly she though your test was Inconclusive, so she really couldnt tell one way or another.

Thats what they told me when I failed. When I went back and took it again (year later) they told me on the spot that I had passed. I think nealopp is talking about all the posts that will come about beating the poly and all that BS!

Only 25-50% pass the LAPD poly right now.

JRoc - I just went through the same exact thing! It sucks. They told me that I had "reacted" to a question regarding drug use. I was absolutely flabbergasted when they told me I had had a reaction to that question. I went in for a second interview and they grilled me about drug use. In my mind im thinking "this is insane" because I have never touched drugs in my life. Oh, and before everyone starts rolling their eyes because they think I am BS'ing about drug use, I have never touched drugs in my life, but apparently society has degraded itself to a point where drug use is more common than its not. So for all of you, yes its true I have never touched drugs, never even held a joint in my hand.

Anyway, hang in there, if you havent done something, you havent done it, and all you can do is keep sticking to the truth. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I am thinking of going for Ventura or LA County Sheriff. Maybe they will have thier act together.

LAPD is a VERY difficult department to get on with so that probably plays a little into your situation. You may be able to request a retest...

I went through exactly the same situation. I appealed and got a second poly, and passed it.

The polygrapher's accusation is not a 100% indication that you failed. Indeed, the fact that she did not accuse you of deception with regard to any specific question suggests that she may have been bluffing to see if she could get an admission of any sort.

Normal polygraph procedure is that if a subject shows a stronger reaction to a relevant question than to the corresponding "control" question (thus "failing" the test), that the polygrapher will confront the subject and interrogate regarding that particular question.

In the event that you do receive notification that you failed, be sure to appeal the result in writing and request a re-test. (LAPD often grants re-tests to those that request them.)

For information on how to reduce the risk of a false positive outcome in any future polygraph examinations, see The Lie Behind the Lie Detector, which may be downloaded as a 1 mb PDF here:
