haha, i thank you for your time and consideration. when i re-read the posting it makes me feel the same way you obviously did when you read it. without going too deeply into the details of my life...there was a divorce involved, she left me high and dry and i didn't fight for anything. not even the car. at the time, i had a sales job which required me to drive my own vehicle. quitting this job in order to avoid buying a new car in order to pay off medical bills and my half of the credit card debt from the divorce didn't then, nor does it now, seem like a logical move. so, i financed a new* (read: new to me) vehicle that was a certified pre-owned. not that it matters. the point was that these bills, while current, were being paid on a dual income, and immediately became impossible to pay post divorce. i filled out all the necessary paperwork to get assistance, but was denied based on the previous year's joint earnings. i've since learned that a hospital will take payments of 32 cents per month if it's all you can pay, as long as you pay something. obviously, i learned this too late. i don't think that screams immaturity, as much as it screams lack of total research into my available options...not to be confused with a total lack of research. we all have weaknesses. mine are financial. and i'm doing the best i can. i can't seem to make payments with the collection agencies, so i put the little bit i can spare each month into an account until it reaches a point where i can pay a bill, and i pay it. i'm not a dirtbag. i want to pay this stuff off.

to all who replied to my question:
    thanks for the good advice
    thanks for the reassuring words
thank you for reserving your judgement and giving me the benefit of the doubt

and to the guy who suggested dropping out of a bastion of higher education to pay some medical bills...seriously? if i can't start a career in LE , at least i'll be able to start a career in whatever, make enough to pay what i owe quickly and get squared away, and insure that i don't get into a financial situation like this again. i'm sure all those stones you're casting are a heavy burden. take a load off, guy.

Seriously. An education doesn't mean squat if you can't get a job because you look like a deadbeat.

And I'm eligible to throw the stones, Kid. I went through a divorce, got hammered with all the bills. Difference between you and me is that I was willing to sacrifice to pay the bills off and maintain my credit rating. I realize that doing without is not within your frame of reference because that would indicate responsibility. Buying a new car and continuing the life style you want isn't showing us much.

I must say that your recommendations on how to "survive" after a tough situation such as divorce, are rather lackluster. He had "NO" Transportation and to make money you need a way to get to work. Due to the fact that not every location has access to bus routes, and the only way possible to get to/from work is via automobile I see no problem with him obtaining a loan to purchase a used vehicle. As far as not going to college so that he can payoff medical bill debt, I will have to disagree with this statement as well. I am going through a divorce right now myself, and I have made multiple sacrifices to survive. The main difference that I have benefited from currently is that I am attending college to better the lives of me and my three year old daughter. The job market is tough right now, and the competition is stiff. If you don't have a degree, your application gets tossed to the bottom of the stack, regardless if you would otherwise be way ahead of their qualifications. College is almost a mandatory requirement for any decent paying job these days, and to be able to afford to LIVE on top of paying off a stack of debt will require a decent paying job, one that most certainly would require a college education of some sorts.

Now, my question to you would be this; Was your divorce recent (as in within the current time period of the economic crash that has left so many jobless/homeless)? if it wasn't, then you really can't judge him on the actions that he took to survive. It's a dog eat dog world, and right now there are more pitbulls than poodles and college will turn a poodle into a pitbull.

kaziko, STOP digging up old threads. also, if you continue to side with the idiots as you have done in more than one old thread you've dug up, you're not going to last very long here...

My apologies about replying to older threads. I'm new to forums and I was not aware this was frowned upon. I will refrain from future occurances of this matter

Cool. If you want, you can start a new thread and insert a link to the old thread to reference it in your new thread. You can say something like, I know this has been discussed before but was wondering if there have been any new updates or experiences or additional feedback/opinions regarding this. Or you can ask a "similar but different" question. There may or may not have been any changes since the last post of the original thread and/or some of us may not have been around or seen that particular thread when it was active...
