    Current Job

Hey i am attempting to become a cop, i have several apps in and i know it takes awhile, i have a question regarding my current job. I currently took a job doing corporate security to hold me over until i get accepted as an officer, i graduated from college last May and this is my first full time job. I have been working for a month and a half and im thinking about quitting, the reason is i just dont stand for the values and principles of the organization i work for. Would this possibly dq me from some departments i am processing with ?

Without making a proper judgement what are the values and principles you don't stand for?

At first glance, only working 45 days somewhere doesn't look good. May take some explaining as to why you were only there for a short time. Not that you can't justify leaving but Oldbill has the same question that I do.

The company primarily sends most of its production to overseas companies to save money. When i applied for this position and took the job i did not know this and i am opposed to American companies cutting jobs of Americans to save money. For me it seems like im being 2 faced by working for this comany and my conscience is kicking into overdrive the past few days.

Companies are in the business to make money. Keeping the jobs here is not only important but also patriotic. Having said that, they still need to make money to survive. I would think that you could work there , doing your job without letting it get to you. Afterall, being an LEO means putting up with a lot of BS. You need to be able to tkae it and not run when things happen that you dont agree with. HAving a good work history is important.

How many US companies dont have at least SOME business interest overseas ? Is 5% OK or does it have to be 50% before you bail.

Having a conscience is a good thing and your reasons seem noble but having a job and not quitting because of a corporate position seems to be your best route here.

If you were to quit and they asked you why... You would have to say that you didnt agree with their company policy of using overseas jobs to do work. My impression of that kind of response is ... are you a little nuts ?

    Just my impression.

I agree, mcsap. As a cop, there are a lot of things you won't morally agree with, but will have to accept anyway.

If you don't stick it out, be prepared to answer a few questions about it.

Trying to get hired as a police officer is highly competetive.

You need to pretend that you are a used car that needs a good detailing job to be sold. You need to polish up your image , make sure you have a good background, stable work history, clean arrest record, clean as can be driving record, education or military etc. You need to use everything that you can to SELL YOURSELF to a prospective employer.

We will look at your past, your present, your current job, your last job(S), your landlord, your neighbors, your credit history etc. All of this is done to make sure that you look like a good canidate who if hired, will be a good officer.

Job jumping is not a plus. I drove a truck for a year and a half while testing. It wasn't my life's desire but I did it and did it well. My boss knew what I wanted to do and wished me well when I quit. He offered me a job ANYTIME I wanted if I ever needed work. That is how you should leave an employer if possibe. I also did temp work and they gave me a great reference, even 2 yrs after I had worked for them.

It is not easy to be hired as a LEO and it shouldn't be due to the tremendous amount of responsibility. We want to know that we are hiring good people who can withstand things they don't like and still get on with the job.

I dislike drunks and domestics but they are still part of our everyday job.

Having morals and values is good. However, lets pretend you are against abortion on moral grounds.

You are a police officer on duty and receive a call of protesters at an abortion clinic. You arrive and find protesters in violation of certain laws.

Would you refuse to arrest them? Would you join the protest?

Harley Davidson, the American of all companies does the following:

Leather jackets and chaps are made in Pakistan.

Bikes are equiped with Japanese suspensions and electrical components.

    T-Shirts are largely from Bangladesh.

We are in a world economy. I would assume you do not wear athletic shoes, due to working conditions overseas?

You graduated in May and have worked for 45 days in you first full time job? What were you doing for the five monthes or so since your graduation? They will want to know that too.

I say keep the job. Your function is to provide security not determine where to goods should be made.
And your whiney *** crybaby excuse would be....

You just work for them. You can't control what they do. Do your job well, and continue to get paid. A security job is better than some other BS job any day of the week.

I was working part time jobs in the other months, I see all of your points about what it means to keep this job. I held 3 part time jobs and was applying for police jobs.
