    In the past...

Say at age nineteen you had a restraining order against you,
at age twenty-one if you apply to be a cop, will you be turned down
since you've had a restaining order against you in the past?

If you can't become a cop because of a restraining order, please say no
& elaborate, if you can please elaborate on if it matters what type of
    restraining order & the situation.

You might have a problem getting through the background too, it all depends on the situation. Here's some more info:

The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) and the 1997 Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act contain federal firearms laws related to domestic violence. VAWA makes it a crime for a person who is the subject of a domestic abuse restraining order to transport, receive, or possess firearms or ammunition which have come across state or federal borders. The Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 made several amendments to the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968. The amendments prohibit the possession of firearms and ammunition by persons convicted of state or federal misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence and the distribution of firearms and ammunition to such persons. Unlike the provisions in VAWA, law enforcement officers and other governmental officials are NOT EXEMPT from the amendments. As of the effective date, September 30, 1996, any person convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor may no longer possess a firearm or ammunition. This technical support packet includes information on these two federal laws.

Well, hello to you, too. You haven't provided near enough detail to get ANYTHING approaching an educated answer.

Oh, and it's a little unfair to ask us to elaborate on our answers when you failed to do so to us in your description. But that's just my opinion...

    Okay, sorry for not elaborating,
what if the situation is that at nineteen the guy threatened to severaly hurt
a seventeen year old boy, just because his girlfriend at the time, was talking
    to him.
& because of the threats, the girlfriend got a restraining order for herself, &
    the seventeen year old guy.
could the nineteen year old when he turns twenty-one still become a cop?

Look, kid, we don't know you, and we're not here to judge you. If you want real answers to your question, stop the irritating hypothetical speak. Just say what you did (instead of this "what if someone did..." crap) and give enough details about what happened to result in your restraining order to give you an answer. If you can't do that, don't expect anyone to give you an actual answer to your question.

    Okay,
The whole situation Is I'm going out with a nineteen year old & I'm seventeen.
We went out for about a year & then broke up because he's a very jeleous guy & hates my best guy friend who is seventeen.
A few nights ago, he wanted me to go up to my best guyfriend's house & tell him I'm never going to talk to him agian, I refused wanting to talk about it, but he drove up to his house anyways. From their he told me to call him outside otherwise he'd go up to his door & cause issues & I didn't wan't his parents to get pissed & my boyfriend was pretty pissed I wasn't sure where it was going to go. I called him out & had to tell him we couldn't talk anymore, since I found out my boyfriend had set it up & his best friend & his best friend's girlfriend was there. I was taking it that if I didn't tell my best friend we couldn't talk anymore my boyfriend & his best friend were going to go after my best guyfriend (since I've heard my boyfriend talk to him many times on the phone talking about ways they could hurt him) & his best friend's girlfriend was going to go after me (since she's told me if I doon't make my boyfriend happy she'd kick my butt).
    I was basically set up,
I know I should've ended this relationship awhile ago,
but I was caught up in love & wanted to try & get it to work so bad, I didn't see until now that It'll never work.
Now I want to get a restraining order for my best guyfriend & I.
My boyfriend wanted to be a cop when he turned twenty-one & as much as I want him out of my life without him threatening me, I don't want to ruin his chances of becoming a cop, his life long dream.
So, that's basically the full story, & I want to know that if I do get a restaining order agianst him whether he'd be able to still become a cop.

Assuming this is the whole story and isn't exaggerated, he sounds like he has a major problem. Unless he makes a big turnaround and becomes a very different (and saintly) person, he will probably have problems passing a background investigation whether you get a restraining order or not. They are going to call people he knows, and if he's really as quick-tempered and violent as you say, you probably aren't the only person in his life to know about this. Most girls tell their boyfriends "it's over" on their own. If he is so jealous and dangerous that you may need to break up with him by having the sheriff serve him some papers (whether you actually do it or not), they are not going to want him as a coworker.
    Always we begin again.

in answer to your question, probably not. To elaborate, I have to agree with some others who stated he has issues that won't get by the background or psych evaluation. I wouldn't worry about whether or not he's going to make because of you. Short answer, no.

    Your boyfriend is an IDIOT.

He deserves whatever he gets and if he keeps threatening people and or follows through on his threat , he will get his wish to ride in a cop car but he'll be in the back and have trouble moving his arms.

And if he hasn't hit you yet , it is only a matter of time. I know his type exactly.

Sounds like this guy is a real winner.
It would probably be a good idea that he doesn't become a cop.
Think of it this way, if he is this controling without a gun and a badge how bad will he be when he does have a gun and a badge.

Don't worry about his career prospects and report him! How are you going to feel if he does become a cop and then he abuses somebody in the public or starts threatening his enemies with the force of the badge?

On a side note, there was a story (about 5 years ago) about how police wives would not report domestic violence because they were worried about their economic livelihood. In fact, a judge even scolded a DV victim for pursuing a restraining order on her husband, telling her she was the reason they didn't have their police pension anymore. It infuriated me that our judicial system promoted this type of moral hazard.
