What is the background check process include?

My husband is in the background/ polygraph stage of the hiring process for a city police job. They have told the remaining hires the process is going to move very fast from this point on due to the academy starting in Feb.. We live 2 1/2 hrs from the city he is applying to. Do they come to your house for an interview? Will they call me or just people he wrote down? Any info on what to expect would be great. Thank you.

Generally, the BI begins with interviewing the subject of the BI. This gives people a chance to clarify anything that may need clarifying, as well as updating anything that may have changed. Of course, this MAY be done over the phone, considering you are 2.5 hours away (and we do not know the resources of teh department for which he is applying).

Some agencies will speak only with those referenced in the paperwork. More thorough investigations entail developing additional leads. Who is to say what type of investigation he will be getting, as I don't know the department.

BI's look for at a prospective hire almost as though they are a suspect in a crime and are trying to find dirt on them. If there is none , good for the applicant. If there is and the applicant failed to disclose it ( or flat out lied) , they will find themselves dropped from the process.

My BI came to my house and interviewed my wife and I.

My BI was pretty intense. The investigator spoke with my roommates (on the phone), co-workers (in person), neighbors (in person), volunteer coordinators (places I volunteer), people I had listed to contact (of which the investigator asked them for more contacts).

Went by the gym I workout at, spoke to people I use to date and asked if I had a myspace or FB account.

I think it took about two or three months.

The Investigator came to my house for a three hour interview.

How did the investigator find out what gym you went to and who you used to date? Was this info you volunteered, or did this come from asking your listed contacts about anyone else he should interview?

I hope you were still on good terms with your exes...

We used to do our own BIs...and we are investigators, so finding out things is really not that hard.

Now, have no worries, the investigators are smart enough to consider the source of the information as well as their motives. Information from an ex-spouse who hates you is no less valuable than that of a best friend who would say anything for you.

All this info the investigator was able to get from either my co-workers or contacts listed (the investigator did not ask me what gym I workout at or who my ex's were).

I try to end any relationship on good terms. As best you can anyway, sometimes not always the way it works out.

So tell the investigator EVERYTHING. They will find (whatever it is good/bad) out, let them be the judge of any past actions.
