    need advice desperately

if you have ever been institutionalized for mental illness will that come up in the interview process and if so will it be only if i admit it or can they dig up medical history. My thoughts are the HIPA should protect you but not sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

You have to sign a release to allow them to look at all your medical records. If you try to hide something, you're screwed, as you well should be.

Okay, why would you try to get a job in LE if you want to hide a mental illness history? That's definitely NOT good. Be honest, yo!

It is HIPAA. (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)

You will sign a waiver allowing disclosure of anything under HIPAA. You can refuse, and they don't have to consider you for employment.

Part of being a police officer is having integrity. Starting out by wanting to know if you can lie on an application and get away with it means you dont have any.

Any other categories you want to know if it is OK to lie in so you can try to get hired ??

You have to be deemed mentally stable to do a job that requires you to make life or death decisions and carry a firearm. Your mental history and state is very much a concern for any department hiring police officers. They will want to know, you would think this would be common sense

HIPPA will protect you from having your neighbor go into the hospital and review your medical records.

You will be asked about a history of mental illness, you will most likely go through a polygraph examination and have a lengthy psychiatric evaluation. People who know you will also be interviewed.

If you lie you will never be considered by anyone who finds out, and in some cases Prosecuted.

    Good luck.

If you have been institutionalized for a mental illness then you cannot legally receive a firearm, so you cannot be a police officer.

What kind of mental illness were you institutionalized for?

When I got put into foster care, part of the process was a psychiatric evaluation. I spent three glorious weeks in the state mental institution after having spent three glorious weeks locked up in juvie.

It has not affected my employment in any way. When I joined the Army, I listed it. It may have cost me a day or two as they investigated why I was institutionalized but it didn't affect my military carrer. I still managed to hold a TS clearance.

    Just sayin...

Another thing, depending on how long you were institutionalized, as soon as they pull your school transcripts, they will know. I found that out in 11th grade.

Seems pretty crazy to even ask if you should lie on your initial application. Reminds me of the guy that lied about smoking weed.
