Poly: More for honesty, or background history?

In your opinion,

Is the polygraph used to see if canidates are honest, or to try to dig up dirt about the past? Both? One more than the other...

Quite simply, the polygraph (for preemployment purposes) is used to verify your answers on your background questionnaire. So both, to answer your question.

The hiring process is so much easier if you don't try to over-think everything (I know, easier said than done ;)).

Another question:

Do they allow you to eloborate after you are asked questions on the poly.

ie... have you done any illegal drigs, you answer yes, do they follow up on it?
