    Question juvenile Threat of suicide

Hello I was hoping for a lil advice here is my situation. I have my A.S. degree in Criminal Justice and will have 4 years of military service. But what I am worried about , was 8 years ago , ( when I was a juvenile) I threatend to kill my self to a officer, this actually happened twice. I spent a total combined about 1 week in a mental facility. This was also a issue before I got into the military i was checked out by a psych and ok'ed. Will Juvenile suicide attempt dq me?

It will likely depend on the state you are in.

In Connecticut you cannot legally carry a gun if you have been confined in a hospital for persons with psychiatric disabilities within the last 12 months, but they generally extend that to mean "ever". If you cannot carry a gun you cannot be a cop.

    larification

I never really "attempted " to kill my self , it was just idle threats, in two very isolated no criminal charge incidents. Im in Georgia, and never had any problem buying a gun, or CCW permit. The Atlanta PD recriuter said this wont be a problem as long as I pass the deparment psych test. But I would like multiple inputs

Unless it is a DQ in your state against possessing firearms, it probably wouldn't be an auto-DQ. It would be up to the psychologist giving the psych exam to decide wether or not you should be allowed to proceede in the process.

It will likely depend on a lot of factors:

What was your age at the time of the incident? Were you 6, or were you 16? Was it an actual attempt, or was it a threat? How many times did this happen? Were you adjudicated "mentally defective" or involuntarily confined to a mental facility, or were you voluntarily admitted? What have you done since then (school and military, or drugs and drinking)? And, as Mobrien said, does your state place any additional restrictions on carrying a firearm?

You've already touched on some of these, but don't need to answer here anyway, because even if you did, I don't have a magical computer program or something I can plug the answers into and have it spit out results. ;)

My point is that a psychiatric history is bad if you're trying to get into LE, and some factors are more damning than others, but it's not automatically disqualifying for every job everywhere. However, expect an uphill battle.

I had a psychiatric blemish on my record from 15 years ago. My medical evaluation was almost flunked because of it, but I was able to work with my doctor to get evaluated by a shrink who gave me a letter of sanity. So, I'm good-to-go, at least with my current agency.

However, there's no guarantee that I could apply for another agency and get hired. Their standards may be different, their lawyers may be more antsy about psych histories, etc. It's really a liability game for the agency and the doc that signs you off.

In summary, it's not impossible, but it may be very, very difficult.
