I am a contracted Army ROTC cadet at the University of Hawaii that is voluntarily disenrolling from the program and the scholarship contract(which has a service obligation) because of personal/familial issues (which have also induced homesickness I can't get over) that won't be solved if I continued with the program. Because of these issues I have symptoms of depression and anxiety but I was never diagnosed nor have I taken medication because I refuse to have the stigma and I have absolutely no doubt that returning home will resolve everything. However, my main concern is that its possible that a discharge (according to AR 145-1) from my service obligation may be characterized as medical, rather than a hardship-related General discharge, which might pose an issue during the hiring process.

I am transferring to CUNY Hunter this spring semester so that I can deal with these issues.

I have 0 criminal offenses and only a single traffic violation. I have yet to establish a line of credit, and no issues at all with substances. I'm from Queens, NY and the NYPD has always been a consideration alongside a military career. I have already passed the exam with a 94 and my score is on hold. I have references that consist of several Army commissioned officers and NCOs here at my ROTC battalion that will be more than happy to verify my good standing and the fact that I have done well here, physically and academically.

Now that a military career is out of the question, will the issue I just wrote about be a problem during the hiring process?

    Thanks, guys.
The government jobs you apply for will want to know what the medical conditions were, which according to this statement, it was mental, anxiety & depression. Depression will pretty much eliminate you.

Law enforcement is viewed as a para military investigation. They are going to know why you couldnt handle being away from home and also wonder if you couldnt hack it in an ROTC they will question ywhethr you can make it in LE.

Like I said, I merely have symptoms and I've never been diagnosed. All of these problems are prompted by issues with my family that require me to be at home. Once I get back to them, they will no doubt be resolved. So, regardless of these circumstances, I'd still be eliminated?

The instructors here at ROTC consist of Army officers and NCO's. My instructors over the past two and a half years were three MAJ's, two of which who have their ranger tab and CAB's/CIB's and an SFC. They have made it known to me that they are more than willing to support my performance here as references. Its only unfortunate that my issues and the my issues at home would not be solved if I continued with the program.

If you are being dishcarged under a medical, it's going to cite a reason for it, will it not...?

Yeah, I guess the real issue is what discharge they'll decide to hand down.

Any discharge that is not an "Honorable Discharge" will be a hurdle in the hiring process.

According to CUNY Hunter's website, they offer an AFROTC program. Why can't you look into transferring into that program and still fulfilling your obligation to the military? If your current instructors speak so highly of you, they'd probably be more than willing to help you along there.

As GoDirectly2Jail stated, ANY discharge other than an honorable one will have to be explained in detail and could render you ineligible for hire. I know we have had several applicants who were discharged from the military in basic training basically because they were homesick and had other similar issues, and none of them have been hired. What's going to happen when the department puts you on a midnight shift or gives you days off that you're not accustomed to? Are you going to claim some sort of family obligations and quit?

If the discharge ends up being because of psychological reasons, you can pretty much kiss your chances of a LE career goodbye.

    Thanks for the information.

I'm trying to avoid disclosing what my family issues really are, but I'll leave it at as long as I'm in NY, everything will be fine.

NYPD will not hire with a "less than honorable"

Why? This is an anonymous website where nobody knows you. You can bet that you'll have to disclose what the issues are during the hiring process.
