    Question ineligible indefinitely

Hello all and thank you for your time,

I had applied for the LVMPD and was doing quite well. My rank was 21 out of probably 4-500. I live a clean life and have not even received so much as a speeding ticket. Upon meeting with my background detective I was completely honest. About 5 years ago I had finished a doctor given prescription for Lortab pills even though my pain had subsided. (I took maybe 5 which was what was left in the bottle) I also admitted to keying a car 3 years ago. Today I received a letter informing me that I am "not eligible to apply with LVMPD for any position indefinitely". They cited my "criminal history/involvement which I can only assume is the keying incident and my "drug history". ( I have never even smoked a joint) Also cited was "character issues". This seems really harsh for being COMPLETELY honest.

Am I done for good with other departments? I was totally honest and the "truthfulness" place on the letter was not checked as a reason. I know deception is a deal breaker. Should I even bother to apply for the other departments in my area? I really can't stress enough that I lead a clean life, I don't even drink.

    Thanks and please be honest,

    S.

If you abused prescription painkillers, it's the same as using a hard drug.

I think the devil will be in the details here. Did you take the last 2 pills in the container, or did you use the three refills you didn't need?

    Thanks for the reply,

No, no there were no refills on the prescription. I took what the doctor gave me, no more. I didn't NEED to take the last few in the bottle and the detective pointed that out.

I guess I dont see an overly huge deal with that although i never take anything when i dont need it. Lv has plenty of applicants so they can be as picky as they choose to be. You may have a shot somewhere else but no one can really tell you, you just have to apply.

I don't think you would be disqualified everywhere based on what you told us.

    One point.
Also cited was "character issues". This seems really harsh for being COMPLETELY honest.
Don't confuse telling the truth with whatever you lacked in character that allowed you to key a car. That DOES show a lack of character. You need to take this as an opportunity for some introspection. Grow from this.

The detective pointed out you didn't need the medicine? So he's a doc, too? :p

Did the doc say you didn't need to take the last few, or did you just feel better and think you were cured of what ailed you? When I've taken prescriptions before, I've been told to take the entire bottle, or will do so, until they tell me otherwise, or unless I've having unbearable side effects.

Usually bottles of narcotic pain pills will direct you to take them "as needed" for the pain. So you did take a narcotic painkiller, though prescribed to you, outside of the prescription directive. Doing so is abuse of the drug.

That said, I don't think this will kill you everywhere. Larger agencies are more selective, so maybe start smaller and work your way there. Your past actions say something about your character then. Others may consider them to be small hurdles, yet they weighed heavily enough on your mind to include them. Hell a lot would honestly have forgotten about the few pain pills. That tells me a little something about your character now.

txinvestigator gave you the best advice - grow from experience and keep trying. If that's all there is, and with more time, you'll probably make it eventually. Just be willing to start small and work hard.
