Mayor Bloomberg & NYPD Commissioner Kelly Swear In New Class Of 112 NYPD Recruits

    January 11, 2010

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today swore in a new class of 112 New York City Police Department recruits. The recruits begin formal Police Academy training next week. The January 2010 Police Academy class is 63 percent minority, and consists of recruits who were born in 15 countries. Nineteen of the recruits have prepared for their careers by serving in the military. Today’s class includes 65 recruits who began their careers with the Police Cadet Corps and 81 who carry college degrees. Funding for this class comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the federal Transit Security Grant Program. The ceremony was held in the 1 Police Plaza auditorium.

“There is no more important responsibility in our democracy than keeping our citizens safe,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Your decision to join New York’s Finest speaks volumes about the extraordinary individuals you are. Welcome to an organization that has continued to drive down crime and welcome to a job where every day is a new adventure, and every tour is an opportunity to make this City a better place.”

“No matter where you’re from, whether this is your second career or your first job out of college, you have unique skills and valuable life experience to contribute to our three-fold mission of combating terrorism, fighting crime, and building cooperative community relations,” said Commissioner Kelly. “You’ve made a great decision and you have a bright future ahead. Congratulations and welcome to our team.”

The average age of the January 2010 class of recruits is 25. Seventy-nine percent reside in New York City.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but this is wisdom right here! I want to hang this in my command.
