To want to become a cop for selfish reasons such as job security and financial security among others non-selfish reasons? Would this be a wise thing to mention in an interview?

List the non-selfish reasons first. The selfish reasons should be icing on the cake. IMO, the selfish reasons you mentioned may help them to be convinced that yuou believe the job si good all around and you won;t bail after they spen $100K equiping and training you.

Yeah I am working on just putting the other reasons into words, but there is no doubt the "selfish" reasons are there, I can't deny them.

I don't see them as selfish reasons. They are practical decisions that show you are being honest and practical.

When they asked me questions as to why I wanted to do this, I was honest with them just like you're saying, and explained that I wanted a career in Law Enforcement, something with security and long term; there's nothing wrong with that, in fact, you should say that in my opinion if you feel that way.

I agree with RP. That is the reason I sought out the field in the first place. Job Security. You don't see that now-a-days in my field.

I think those are all very good reasons...nothing truly selfish in and of themselves. They show your desire to excel more than anything I think.

When I started, I didn't even know what the pay was ! Turns out it was $15,685 , no way anyone could have accused me of wanting the job for the money !!

P.S. I do a lot better now.

i would start with reasons that would should show importance in order: community, department, self. thats just my opinion.
