    preference for residents question

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone have an idea of how hard it is to be appointed with a dept that has an exam open to anyone, but preference is given to residents? I applied for the exam in the small city in New York State I lived in for the first 25 of my 30 years, and the clerk told me it is going to be hard because I no longer live there.
Is it really that bad? if I were to get a chance at employment, I would move back in a second. does that have any weight?

Suffolk county used to give preference to SC residents. In doing so they could have to exhaust EVERY SC resident before they call you who lives outside of suffolk. That means the SC resident with a score of 70 gets called, and you with your score of 100 doesn't.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Also some states go by a point system.
Example. A resident may get 20 points added to their overall test scores.

It all depends on the department.

We take our candidates from a county wide test, however we have whats called a town preferred list. If you dont live in my Town, you wont be canvassed by us. The only other way into my department is a transfer and you can live anywhere at that point.
