In order to be CA Post certified (basic cert), you must go through and academy and pass at least 12 months of a probationary period and have you dept apply for the cert.
If you are just talking about an academy certification, that is good idea if you want to be attractive to the smaller departments. Some depts. want you to go through their training.
Most departments require State POST certification for officers.

I think what he is asking is whether or not it is worth the cost of putting himself thru POST via a school like Rio Hondo (private academy). The only upside that I see is that many depts recruit from these schools rather than spend the money on putting recruits thru them. The downside is that you are spending ALOT of your own money. If you are sure that you will have no probs in backgrounds and the like, then it may be a good option to consider.

i will be sending myself through the academy at rio hondo. it is going to wipe out my savings with paying for the academy and then paying my bills while doing the academy (can't work with a full-time academy). it will be hard but i will get my academy complete and possibly be recruited out of there.
btw chuck, i was at rio hondo today. did you know they had all the cadets split in 4 groups-some were shooting, some in the classroom, and some in the gym. i wonder if they mix the groups up regularly or i may never see you. oh, and i also say nike rd that you mentioned.
