How do I become a better applicant?

I am planning to enter law enforcement in a couple of years, after my daughter has grown up a little and my wife graduates from college. I have a BA in Criminology, but I realize not only that this degree is somewhat pointless for someone who wants to work the streets, but also that a high percentage of fellow applicants will have degrees as well. I want to be able to stand out as possibly a stronger candidate than others. I currently volunteer with Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and I occasionally work with Habitat for Humanity. What else should I do besides get into peak physical shape that might help my chances?
