Hi all,
Lets say I become NYPD and finish the academy and all that. Are cops usually hired near where they live in New York City, or it can be quite far? I live out in Queens, close to Long Island.

You will go to impact. I think that they are somewhat accommodating. But when it comes down to it you will end up the NYPD needs you.
Thanks Kyle G. I'm hoping to go somewhere in Queens so I can feel like I'm "serving my own community", but if that doesn't happen, no problem.
Anyways, I took the exam about an year or so ago, did well, and went for the paperwork. That's where I stopped the process. Originally, my parents went crazy when they found out I wanted to be a cop. It was hard for me to go on with the process knowing their worries and I'm sure many cops here can relate. I think after some months, I've been able to calm them down somewhat, but they're still worried. Sometimes, you know what you want to do. Anyways, hopefully, I can get back into the hiring process and make it for the next academy in January 2009. I will call the NYPD recruit center tomorrow to find out. Are these academies once or twice per year?
Nevermind about the academy question... google works heh. Academy classes are usually in January and July from what I'm reading.
You'll end up in transit (trains), psa (housing), or in a precinct. You get a dream sheet in the academy of where you'd like to work. When graduation is near and the assignments are given out most recruits can keep dreaming. There are plenty of impact posts waiting for you to take their spot. You can be sent anywhere but IMO it's unlikely to be sent to Staten Island if you reside in Queens or LI. More likely you'll be sent to the Bronx or Brooklyn given the amount of shootings and high crime.
