I know you are supposed to use the people that know you the best. My best friend, however is dating an ex drug dealer and she has done drugs in her past. So I’m not sure if I should use her or not, and if I don’t would they ask my why I didn’t, like I was trying to hide something?

No you can't, but you CAN control who you hang out with.

Just don't use her as a reference if you aren't comfortable with it.

If you use a reference who uses drugs and is dating a drug dealer, do you think the investigator is going to assume that you two only met each other in Sunday School ? !!

If you want to be part of the LEO community, lose ALL connections with those who are engaged in illegal activity or who could otherwise drag your name ( and hopes of becoming a cop ) in the mud.

when i put in references for my naval career i didnt use druggies or ex cons even though i know quite a few. There has got to be folks out there that you know that will help. Ask your parents etc for someone they know for references. I did that and got my trustful and clean buddies and some college professors professionals and cops.

Actually, I am friends with an investigator who is friends with her as well, and I never see her anymore because of her boyfriend, we mostly just talk on the phone or online.

I have plenty of other references to use, I just thought you were supposed to put down the people who knew you the best.

dont put her down, i think you answered your own question here.
and as stated before, you need to re-evaluate your friends if you want to pursue a career in law enforcement.
