Ok, here's my story - Do I have a shot?

    Hi all,

    Ok here's the deal:

I'm 33 married, 2 kids and have worked for the same employer (only) for nearly 20 years.
My background (not perfect): I have only had 2 run in's with the law ever. 1st was when I was 17, sexual misconduct (was having consensual relations with a freshman i was a senior and the mom friggin hated me) and was put into youthful offenders status. Other was a DWAI 10 years ago, which is a violation in NY.

Credit: Not so hot, 650 ish. few lates.

Physical shape: Never smoked (tried when i was 13 didn't care for it), never did or tried any ill drugs EVER! No medical issues, 20/20 vision good hearing but little overweight 20 lbs (currently running my butt off and doing pushups situps).

So, there it is....I know i'm older but this is something i want to do and have for a long time. Hopefully I bring something to the table from my work experience but am worried that my past will DQ me. My cop friends say im safe as long as im honest which i have no reason not to be.

One more question... since the youthful offenders thing is sealed should it be disclosed on my app? Will it come up on my b-ground being that it was sealed. Just want to be completely above board here.

Thanks in advance for commenting and also all that you VLE's do!!

This is easy. The simple answer is: If they ask you a question, you will give them a truthful and complete answer to their question.
    Always we begin again.

another thing that has occurd to me as I look over the polygraph test requirments and pre test is (and maybe it isn't the same for my city) that they will ask you to list anything and everything you ever took from your employer or anyone etc... See the thing is I am sure that I have taken something unintentionally (pens, office supplies) or borrowed a tool or something with the intent on returning it....I have worked here for almost 20 years. My issue isn't whether or not to say yes i did take, i am sure of it, my issue is what if i can't remember that far back and i miss something?? Am i going to get jammed up on the poly if i can't remember the little stuff from my past?

There's no such thing as a record being "sealed" because of being a juvenile. The only thing that means is that private sector employers and random people pulling your record can't see it. Law enforcement and government agencies see your ENTIRE record unless it was actually expunged. There's a big difference in an expungement and a "sealed" record. Even with an expungement there is still a notation made that the record was expunged--so we know SOMETHING existed at some point.

As long as you explain it then it will be fine. Forgetting that you took small office supplies over the years and then not returning them because they basically have no value isn't going to hurt you. If you made it a point to take money from the petty cash box or to steal inventory items during your tenure, that's a different story.
