    Question about pay

Just a quick question for everyone. I'm looking to make a career change into Law Enforcement and am trying to compile as much information ahead of time. This is my first post here, but this forum has helped me a good deal as I've been reading it regularly for the last few weeks.

My question is this: is starting pay for a police officer with no law enforcement experience negotiable. I realize the pay is going to be low with no experience, but is the pay negotiable at all similar to private civilian jobs? Most corporate jobs have a pay range..... do LEO positions?

Thanks in advance for any answers. Hope everyone's having a great night.

    - J

    No.

They make an offer. You take the job, or you don't, period.

No. There is no negotiation. The pay is set at each level of experience and rank, and that's what you get.

Awesome...that's what I needed. I expected the answer to be no, but wanted to make sure. I'm looking at civilian/private jobs as well and wanted to know how to compare them. I'm still very interested in law enforcement, just was curious, hence the question. Thanks everyone!

Some agencies pay very well and some agencies pay very poorly. You just have to find the ones in your area that pay well.

One of the good things is that every government job's salary schedule must be posted somewhere, be it on the Internet or somewhere else (like at city hall). It's all public record so you will know going in what a rookie officer makes, what senior officers make, and what all your supervisors and managers make. You don't get that in the private sector.

NYPD recently got a raise. Starting salary is around 36k, top pay around 65k. There's also a tentative deal (covering the period of 8/1/06-7/31/10) which if passed (ballots just mailed out) will raise starting salary effective 8/1/08 to around 40k, top pay around 73k, effective expiration of the contract starting salary around 42k, top pay around 76k. This doesn't include other pay such as night dif, holiday pay (11 days salary), uniform allowance (1,000), or longevity (paid after 5 years, and increasing every 5 years thereafter).

NYPD (as are many other agencies in this country) are union and have set contracts.

No it didn't that contract has not yet been voted on by the members of the PBA. It is a TENTATIVE contract which was negotiated by the city and the PBA board, and approved by the delegates for voting by the membership.

That's about what we get. An officer coming from another agency may be able to start higher on the pay ladder. I'm not sure how that works, never needed to know.

We got the longivity pay about 10 years ago, just before I retired. It's a nice bump.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine
