Applying for LAPD

I am 24 years old and will be graduating this fall with a degree in Criminal Justice. I am worried about applying to police departments because I fear I may be turned away for being immature and unreliable. I fear this because I held a job for 3 years at a pharmacy and then was fired 2 years ago when I transferred to Cal State Fullerton. I joined a fraternity and was unable to manage my time between pledging and working. I then worked for my dad's engineering company in the winter but decided to quit after a month because of my conflicting school schedule in the spring. I then didn't not work until August of 07. I was hired at GNC and worked there until March of 2008 but left without giving my two weeks notice.
I have no criminal background, and have smoked marijuana 5x, the last time being almost 3 years ago. I have 2 speeding tickets and perfect credit. This fall I will also be interning with a police department for units in college.
My question is should I apply or stay in school, get a job, and keep it for awhile to gain a reliable reference for the police departments?

Why did you smoke dope?

I was a sophomore in high school the first 2x. The next 2x, I was a freshman in college, and at the time an electrical engineering major. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I started working at a pharmacy the same year and after talking to one of my friends who was a criminal justice major it became clear to me I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. I had been clean for 1 1/2 years and I went to Mexico for a spring break trip with my best friend, a coworker, and my coworker's friend. One of the nights we drank way too much and my coworker's friend decided to smoke marijuana. I made the dumbest decision in my life and took two hits with him. I was very drunk but there is no excuse for smoking especially knowing I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. I made a big mistake and shortly after I thought about changing my major but then came to the realization that someday I will become a cop, no matter how long I have to wait.

The fact that you admitted you are immature and unreliable displays a weird bit if maturity in itself. You sound like you know where you need to be. Just give it some time and you'll be fine.
