    Unhappy Interview Coming Up

Hello! This is my first post on this board and have a question. I appreciate all the responses that I receive.

I applied for a position for Police Recruit with the Torrance Police Department and have passed the Entrance Exam. I now have the Panel Interview next week. They have sent me a City Application that I need to fill out and am worried about my employment history.

I am not worried about the drug usage because I have not smoked marijuana since 2003. But unfortunately I was terminated from my last place of employment because there was marijuana in my system. The circumstances are me being at my cousins friend's birthday party where I had found out later on that the cake that was served was made with marijuana. The next week I had to undergo a urinalysis and I failed.

I have known this person since I was 7 years old. Since I was terminated, I have not been around this person. I could pass a drug test right now. I realize that a mistake was made and I am ultimately at fault for eating the cake.

The question I have is on my employment history, should I leave this employment period out? Because I also was working for my friend's company at the same time and still am working for my friend. Or would they know that I worked for this company? Thanks in advance.

I find it hard to believe, that your "cousin" would offer you marijuana cake without letting you know about it. Leaving employment history out would result in "integrity" issues. The BI well find out, and when he/she does you will be kicked out.

Did you seriously come here and ask us if we thought it would be okay for you to LIE on an application to cover up the fact that you were fired from a job for failing a drug test?

The fact that you even began to consider that as an option tells me you are wholly unsuited to work in Law Enforcement.

    Find a new career.

The fact you had to ask a question like that tells me all I need to know about your integrity. By the way I SERIOUSLY doubt someone would serve a cake laced with marijuana without people being aware.

    Fine another line of work.

I asked because I had passed a drug screening when I began my employment as a background investigator and know what goes into a background report. I have not smoked it in 5 years and this one time it was at a birthday party with alot of people and it was not my cousin who served it to me.

I already listed it on my employment and have spoken to my former employer who has no hard feelings about what happened. Guess we will see.

Yea I guess my little mistake is alot worse than those "police" that were involved in things like the rampart scandal, King beating, etc. Wait a minute, those guys passed the tests.

Do yourself a favor and get your drug using behind out of here. Next time something bad happens and you require some help dont bother calling us who have passed the test and proudly serve our jurisdictions, call your pothead stoner friends who serve "marijuana" laced cake.

What you did in the past is not an automatic disqualifier for life, though it may mean you have to wait a bit.

Asking us if it's okay to LIE on your application shows a lack of maturity, as does your answer above.

The officers in the Rodney King incident were CLEARED of criminal charges in court. They (IMHO) made some tactical errors, and it didn't look good on tape, but they weren't criminals.

There ARE some bad cops, but we do everything in our power to limit them from getting in in the first place, and fire them or put them in prison (as appropriate) when they do get through.

One little clue we use (don't tell anyone else) to weed them out is to find out which ones are willing to lie to get what they want.

Either grow up in a hurry, or find a new career.

Well I already put it in my employment history and will have to wait and see. The main reason I asked was because I was doing background checks for companies, government, and private citizens and wanted to know if the they retrieved information the same way we did. And I was embarassed as to why I was fired.

You made the right choice in putting it in. Even if it costs you this job, time will help. Getting caught in a lie would DQ you for life.

The above is a much more reasonable answer than the "look at all the corrupt cops out there" tripe you tried to dodge the issue with earlier.
