    Driving record question

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hey everyone,

I tried posting the question in ask-a-cop but no one replied so i thought maybe this question would be better suited here. I am 20 years old and currently in college to obtain a B.A in Criminal Justice. I graduate in 2011 with hopes of becoming a police officer. There is just one thing that worries me. I know that during the recruitment process, the department checks your driving record. Well about a year ago when I was 19, I was driving down a road when a sports bike went to pass me on a double yellow line, me out of stupidity moved over and got in front of him. Long story short, he crashed the bike with no injuries and when I stopped to make sure he was ok, he punched out my window because he was mad. He was also of the same age as me. I ended up calling the police and no citations or criminal charges were filed against me. An ambulance also came and he refused treatment because he said he was not injured. The police charged him with criminal mischief for punching out my window. There were no witnesses to the accident. The police report stated that they believed it was my fault because I ran him off the road based on each of our stories as to what happened. And the insurance company agreed with the police. I got a copy of my driving record from the state and it was clean nothing is on it. I have had 2 very minor fender benders since I got my license about 3 years ago. I have had no traffic citations, or anything of the like. Even though nothing had shown up on my driving record, when I state it on my SPH will a police department choose not to hire me because of this accident, even if i am accident free? I don't plan on filling out applications until 2012 so it will be over 4 years since it happened. Thanks

You tried to run a motorcyclist off the road because he was going to pass you (albeit in a place he shouldn't have)? You don't even sound remorseful about the situation...if they are hiring stupid jerks in your area then I'm sure you are a shoe in.

You intentionally caused a crash that could very well have killed the guy? And you want a law enforcement agency to arm you and turn you loose on the unsuspecting public?

don't get me wrong i am remorseful about the situation i was dumb but I knew the police officers that came to the scene and they basically said that it was both of our faults. I knew the kid who was on the motorcycle and he knew me. I'm an EMT so while we were waiting for the police I took his vitals and made sure he was ok he basically just wanted to leave. Everyone does dumb stuff when they are younger the thing is that I learned from the crash, I just want to know if a police department will DQ me because of it even if it is not on my official record.

crap, i aint gonna lie, i pass on a double line all th time. theres places where its double line and i can clearly see around a car, so i pass. doesnt make it right, but if someone ran me off the road for it, we would have issues.

And for what its worth, I have been told by several officers NOT to get a criminal justice degree. They said if you get that degree, get on the streets and find out law enforcement isnt for you, you dont really have a fall back degree, your locked into LE. Just passing on what I was told.

Well , getting in a crash or getting cited for stupid traffic vio's certainly isn't the best way to get a good start as a rookie.

Oh i make sure there are no cops around before i pass, and i have all my radar detectors in my car monitroing so i should be able to not get caught...

LOL, Im really a safe driver. Been a volunteer fireman for several years, seen some pretty bad wrecks caused by bad driving, so I really am cautious. Doesnt change the fact i've done it, but i didnt mean to give the illusion i'm wreckless.

You're an EMT?!?!? Holy Mother of God....

...so let me get this straight just for the record....

You are an EMT, so you've been in classes, at a minimum, most likely to a TA or two, where you have seen what stupid mistakes that drivers make UNINTENTIONALLY can do to a motorcyclist....but here you are a supposedly educated member of society, and you do it ON PURPOSE!! Why? Because you were agitated that he crossed the double yellow?!?! So what? is that all it takes for you to lose your cool?? ...and you want a gun to carry?!?!?!

HOW THE HELL can you even think of becoming a police officer?!? You should run down to the firehouse right now and turn in your EMT card!! After that is said and done, go get your head looked at.

A few years back, a guy posted on a local motorcycle forum about running motorcyclists off the road in a "whacker" car, one that looks like a police car that is driven by wannabes. Not only did that post get posted ALL over the local sites here in MD, but it made the news and he had his own website dedicated to him from motorcyclists www.johnparkssucks.com (it has since been taken down, but only after about 18 months of hate mail.)

Who knows, maybe you are that guy...back again?!?

I have no sympathy for your situation, and I don't need to know anymore about you to know that you, sir, are a piece of sh!t.

...and you say that you knew this guy also? What happens if someone crosses you that you don't know?!?

Sorry to everyone else reading this if I am corssing a line, or harping on this too much, but I am a motorcyclist also, who has lost friends in TAs, now it just infuriates me to think that some of them were on purpose....all because johnny wannabe felt it would be a good idea.

After I graduate the academy, I will be looking to take as many people off the road as possible that are like you.

I take comfort in knowing that the polygraph will weed you out of the process in almost any department you apply for, because what you did, is nothing short of attempted vehicular manslaughter in my eyes.

People like you is why my sister and brothers dad is dead.

Your an EMT and you took his vitals? I'm going to call BS on that...if he punched out your window, he won't let you get 10 feet near him without going after you. Seriously.

Did you stay with him the entire time until the ambulance came? Or did you wander off to talk to the police officer? Because if you did that, thats considered ABANDONMENT. Thats punishable JAIL time for you.

What were vitals going to get you? To see if his heart was racing? See his Resp rate? Were you going to bag em right there if they were <8?rpm

I get it. You have the " I am Superman and am indestructible syndrome". People like you reinvent the traffic laws as you go. I have stopped a few of you in my time and they got cited.

Regardless of how many radar detectors you have hooked up ( I use other devices besides radar) , how careful you claim to be...you keep stacking the odds against you and one of these days you will headline a " BAD CRASH " thread I start here.

I'm going to say it again....You are an EMT and you ran a guy off the road on a MOTORCYCLE??? That is an absolute disgrace . Good luck even finding an airway on someone in a high speed motorcycle crash, they don't always turn out well. And Hockey is right about patient abandonment, you basically did nothing right here.

You know, while you were writing this message, a funeral was being held for a brand new officer in the next town from me. He was by all accounts a wonderful person who loved the community he served, had survived two tours in Iraq and he was killed on his way home from work by a loser with a long history of road rage and drunk driving one week before starting the police academy. One life dead, and another one down the drain for the rest of his life all because of one bad decision.

Get you sh** together man, that story could have been about YOU, minus the drinking. Forget about you, how would your family feel with the shame of knowing what you did for the rest of their lives, your mom having to be patted down and searched while she visits you in prison? You are so lucky that the only thing you may have killed is your career.

It sounds really harsh, but I seriously hope this catches your attention to the same degree that your anger catches it behind the wheel of a car.

Um, I don't even like crossing the center line to pass people who "pull over" in the middle of the road for me with red lights and sirens blasting...in my car or in the ambulance. One person pulls out of a blind driveway without watching and you are done.

Since you haven't replied recently I will assume that you tucked your proverbial tail and ran like a scalded dog, but in the slimest of chances, if you do happen to reply to any of this, please answer me this...

What exactly were you hoping would happen to the motorcyclist when you did what you did?

Dude, was I not sarcastic enough in my response. SO let me make it clear...I WAS JOKING, TRYIN TO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR W/ YOU!! I have ZERO radar detectors in my car. My main point to even talking about passing on a double line was to point out how much of an idiot the guy was who ran the motorcycle off the road.

I realize you have a problem with me, and thats fine, its a free country, but please quit knit picking everything I say. I dont even think you responded to the guy that DID cause the wreck, just to me.
