Trying to volunteer, but not sure about my background check...

I tried to become a 911 operator back in 01, but failed the background check... I told them everything. I have an expunged misdemeanor, some experiemental drug use (like 5 times tops, mj). That's all I could think of that would cause any problem.

So now I have a bunch of free time and I thought it would be fun to volunteer down at the local police station, and I have to do a background check again. Great. So is it gonna be a big waste of everyone's time??

I dno't know if they're gonna pull up the application from the 911 job or not, or if it was so long ago that it won't matter. I wno't be officially a cop, but I guess since I would be in the office, it's probably around the same process.

I also wanted to volunteer for the mounted police unit at the local sheriff's station, but of course, another background check. Does this stuff not count after a certain time or anything like that?? I think the misdemeanor is at least 10 years old.

Any thought or advice is appreciated.

Fraud, I think, is the official charge. :( I didn't mean it, and I paid it all back immediately, which is why its not a felony.

Fraud is a serious charge whether its a misdemeanor or a felony. Obviosly someone thought you did mean it if they pressed charges against you.

No, actually, I didn't mean it. I was on AFDC and broke a rule I wasn't aware of. This happened 12 years ago, I looked it up. Like I said, I paid it all back, it was less than 3K.

Anyway, I just called the original station and they said it was MJ use within the year. Since that was seven years ago, maybe I'm good to go now. She said they have have considered other things, but the MJ use was the only thing they put down.

I really hate lying, I mean, they'd have never known if I left the pot stuff out. But they said to be honest about everything, so I was. I'd so much rather have not gotten the job than always have to wonder if they're gonna catch me.

I hope I can do this volunteer thing. Especially the volunteer mounted patrol, that I really, really want to do.
