Over the last couple years, I have established friendships with a two police officers here. One of them is a Lt, and the other is a Sgt. Is it a good idea to use employees of the agency that you wish to be hired with as references? Are there any benefits? Drawbacks?

I would say it is a good idea. Use anyone that knows you well if you ask me. My father was asked to be a reference for one individual that I know, and he got hired. I guess it didn't hurt him, put it that way.

Do they qualify as references? If yes, list them. If no, then don't.

Yes, use them. Depending on the size of the department, familararity can't hurt. I know in private business, most employees are hired because of past encounters.

Be sure to ask first though.

I assume he means you need to ask the references if it is ok to use them as references.

Are you using them because they have known you for awhile and would serve as good references??

Or is it because they are cops??

It is easy for a B/I to get ahold of fellow dept. members and step a bit deeper into their knowledge concerning you.

Usually they have requirements for who can be a reference. Here, you have to know them for over 3 years, they cannot be family, and they CANNOT BE OTHER LE.
