I have a simple question. I take my exam this month and I was wondering; do they tell me if I passed that day or do I get a letter stating my score.

I dont know of any agency that gives you your score the same day. Most seem to take between 3weeks to 6 months depending on what department. I guess i can only speak for the NY area. It would be a good idea to indicate what state or department you are referring to.

I heard the NYPD walk-in exam gives you your score when you're done. The test is all computerized, so it doesn't take much to give you the results.

As far as the list number is concerned, I would imagine that your rank on the list wouldn't be determined until the exam has been closed and everyone has been scored.

Not only did I get my results the same day, I waited outside the room while they scored mine. It took about 2 minutes for them to score it and then come out and tell me I passed.

Sorry i was unaware of the NYPD computerized test .. i heard of it but never had any info on it because i took the test a few years back.

I think it depends alot on the agency. Back in 1992 when I was serving in the Coast Guard, I went and applied for a part time job with the New Orleans Criminal Sheriff. As I finished the app and a test, we (there were some 30 ppl in the room taking the same app and test) were told not to call for results, that results would be provided some 4 weeks from then via mail.


This was on a Wednesday. Imagine my surprise when by 5pm, there was a message at the Coast Guard call center for me from the Sheriffs dept. I called them and was shocked to learn that I had passed with flying colors and that they wanted me to come in for a poly and a psych the next day. As ridiculous as it sounds (and I agree), I had my Sheriffs Dept. ID by Friday. Of course, I also recognize that out of the 30 ppl in that room with me, I think I was probably the most educated, intelligent and clean cut individual in there. Had guys in full coveralls, dirty with dust from doing bodywork, ppl that stunk to high heaven, hell, half of them looked like they just finished being released through the sallyport.......At that time (maybe not anymore, I don't know) the candidates that were applying were less than desireable.

Point is, I got my results same day and a job offer, pending a positive poly and psych the same day.

I took my test for the Honolulu Police Department last saturday.


I got my results today, saying i passed.


HPD used to score the tests the same day, but idk why they stopped doing it the same day.

Got my results back within 20 minutes of completing the test.
