    College credits,

    Hey just a quick question.

I was dismissed from my previous college, because I wasn't making progress towards my Bachelors degree. Now however I am focused on finishing my Associates degree in hopes to continue towards a Bachelors.

I transferred my college so now I have only 30 credits towards my degree. But at my previous college I had 42 credits. The question is, do I have to wait to get 60 credits at my current college. Or can I show the NYPD the previous college transcript along with my current colleges to make the total of 60?

    Thanks for the help.

One other small question, I was hoping to get a Liberal Arts degree rather then a CJ degree (Associates). I want to continue my education and get my Bachelors in Criminology. Would a CJ degree have any effect on my chances of getting hired?

If i was you I would go back to the previous college and try to see if you can get those 42 credits transfered over to your current college and see were your credits stack up which will help. So far you have 30. You need 45 credits to start the process and 60 by hire. If I was you I would disclose information about being dismissed by a previous college, and focus on your current college now and try to get your associates degree. Hopefully you werent on academic probation on that college that dismissed you for academic reasons. Im also sitting nicely on a liberal arts degree and I just picked up my criminal justice degree BA yesterday at John Jay, what a long line. Any way good luck on your academics and keep up the good work buddy.

    Please no flaming!

I don't think that would do any good considering that the college the original poster is currently attending evaluated his transcript and the credits he was seeking transfer; and awarded academic credit based on the classes offered at that institution.

    To the original poster:

I don't see why you couldn't combine all your credits cumulatively to meet the NYPD semester hour requirement. That is unless they reqiure all credits applied to be used towards a single academic degree.

I'm not sure how bad you must have been academically to have been asked to leave a college program. However just keep in mind that this is now an additional hurdle you will have to present to a BI and overcome. Good luck,

Yes I understand, I made some mistakes in my academic carrier. I hope to take this chance to redeem myself, and show that I am a responsible adult.

You can combine transcripts. I know because I did it. However, you do need a 2.0 GPA. I heard from another recruit that if you don't, you can go through a credit banking service (Excelsior College, Thomas Edison State College) and because of the way they transfer the credits you're good to go. I'd look into it if I were you.

    A 2.0 cumulative GPA right?

That would be correct. Of the Depts. that require college credits, most have them set at 60 credit hours with a 2.0 GPA.

If you have 30 credits from 1 school (with a C or higher) and 42 from another (with a C or higher) than yes you have met the 60 credit minimum for hiring.

You are going to need to explain why you were not able to complete the program you started at some point in the hiring process. There are a lot of reasons you can get dismissed from a college program, some are easier to overcome than others. Getting dismissed because your grades tanked while you were caring for a dying relative in your spare time, or because you had some terrible disease that forced you out of school, or even because you were working two full time jobs to pay for school and just couldn't do it all looks much different to ANY prospective employer or graduate school than getting dismissed because you had little self-control and were tanked most of the semester, or just aren't smart enough to handle it. You'll need to repair some of the damage with time and hard work if it was your fault. Even if it was due to things out of your control, you will need to prove that is the case by reversing the negative pattern on your transcript when you return. Either way, it might be to your benefit to stay 2 more years and finish a BA to show you can be successful and stick with a program to the end.
    Always we begin again.

If I were you, the things I would in order:

1)Take your credits from your previous school and see how many credits transfer over, you should've did this when you applied to the new school. This will give you the exact number of credit hours you have.

2)If you have improved at your 2nd school to the point where you can become eligible at your old school, I would go through that process and get accepted into your 1st school.

3)When your academic situation comes up, be honest and say you made a mistake your 1st year in college, whatever that reason was. Then show them that you have learned from your mistakes and that you have made the efforts to take the appropiate responsibility and knocked off the BS to become a good student and that you're eligible to enroll at the 1st school again.

Everyone makes mistakes, how you correct those mistakes is what separates how you're viewed long-term.
