Advice on getting a better score

So I took the NYPD exam yesterday, and got an 87 (unofficial). I was happy with that, considering I've never taken a practice exam, studied, or did anything to prepare myself. From what I've heard, thats plenty to get on the job with them (assuming I were to pass the BI and all that).

However, I will be finishing college, so would like an opprotunity to better my score down the road, and on other tests. I've seen alot of websites that offer books and tapes that tell you how to get a better score on these exams. Are they worth it?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

87 is a decent score and maybe I'm just abnormally crabby today but why in gods name would you not do ONE THING as you stated above to attempt to prepare yourself for the exam?

If your user name is accurate and you want to become a member of NYSP you better put a little more time, effort and preparation into that then your NYPD exam.

I didn't do one thing because I took the exam on really short notice. It was a walk in exam that I did not have to pre-register, and I found out about it less then a week in advance. I had some school work to take care of, as well as a family matter to attend to. Not trying to make an excuse, but belive me, when it comes time for the next exams, I will be preparing long in advance. That's why I'm asking now what is the best way to prepare.

I can't speak for the NYPD exam but I have taken some written tests for different agencies here in Virginia. I purchased a police study guide for like 30 bucks and it has helped me out for sure. I scored a 93 on the most recent and I am now in the final stage of the hiring process. Bottom line is if you are really serious about becoming LEO and if you want it bad enough why would you not do everything in your power to better your chances, regardless of how much or little it may help? Anything you can do to get an edge over the competition is well worth it. Studying for a test will never hurt you only help.

Thats what I plan on doing. That's why I came here looking for the advice? What is the study guide you used? Did you find it online?

    Thanks again,

I live in a small hillbilly town in Texas, and I can walk into the local bookstore and find 10-15 study guides on police exams.

I never used one though because all the exams I've taken thus far, a 3rd grader could have passed. Just bone up on your basic Math and English skills...because that's all that has been on my "civil service exams".

    Answer more questions correctly... :p

Since you already took the test, seems to me that you should have a PRETTY GOOD IDEA of what you need to study/learn/improve on...
