Do departments really restest if you fail the PAT or agility test?? I heard someone say that the NYSPP & NYSP both do. Anyone know this to be true or false??
Thanks

Mine does, you have to wait a couple of months or so, but you can retake it. Of course ours is so watered down now that if you can't pass it the first time, you should probably think of an other line of work.

The department I'm applying for lets you retest after 6 months which can put you at risk for missing out on the following academy.
Honestly, no one should fail the PAT. Anyone who is serious about law enforcement should look up the requirements for their particular department well in advance and begin the physical preparation before they apply. It took me three months to get in shape for the PAT at the department for which I am applying, and that included one request to reschedule because I wasn't fit enough to exceed the minimum standards.

I'm probably gonna get smacked for this, but they watered it down so more women could pass it. The one I went through consisted of 35 pull ups in so many seconds (I forgot how many), so many sit-ups in an allotted time and then run a quarter mile broken up into 100 ft dashes in a minimum time. You got about 30 seconds rest in-between. The dashes were hard because you had to stop at the end of each dash, bend down, put a large wooden peg in a hole, pick up another and then run again. It wasn't a straight run, you had to continually stop and collapse your diaphragm.
The requirements have gone up and down over the years. At one point, they had to put in pulling the trigger of a revolver 6 times in rapid succession because we hired a little woman who couldn't. They all but eliminated it for a while and the result was a bunch of Pillsbury Doughboy men getting hired. Now I have no idea what it is. The last I heard there was some dragging a dummy around. But looking at the men and women they still hire, it can't be all that hard.

I find it interesting that the NYSP allow for a retest right after testing, I wonder how many people actually pass after giving it their all 10 mins ago. Anyway I agree with you guys if you really want it go out and get it, the qualifications are given to you so you should be able to pass, yet I hear that a large number of people fail the PAT???
Thanks again for your response guys
Alot of people take the PAT for granted. They believe if they want it bad enough that combined with adrenaline will push them over the top. Its just not so.

yeah, alot of people who came to the PAT that I passed found out that the adrenaline is good for the first event, the 300 meter sprint. Afterwards, they discovered that once that test is done, their legs were cooked and they would have to complete the rest of the PAT using their core strength, which of course they failed to build up.
