How you conduct yourself is a huge factor on how potential employers are going to view you. You can't do drugs legally in the U.S., so you think you can go somewhere else and it will be alright to come back and be a LEO?
Can you go to a country that's know for human rights violations, do whatever it is that you're going to do, then come back to the U.S. like nothing ever happened? I think not.
I don't think you have a chance for at least a few years. :rolleyes:
i understand it was a bad move but I had no intention of going there to do drugs, it just happened and now I regret it. I have no criminal record at all and being a police officer is something that I really wish to achieve (practically all my life). It was a stupid thing that will never happen again, are my chances really that bad for making that one mistake? I am am going to be completing my BS in criminal justice and them i will be moving on to get my masters degree, will that one mistake ruin my life?

You haven't even mentioned what the "brownie" contained, but one can only assume.
I don't know why anyone pursuing a BS in CJ, intending to become a cop, then get a Masters degree would willingly and knowingly use a drug, even once.
You'll just have to put a few years in between the incident and the time you start to apply. Until then, don't do anything stupid and stay out of trouble!

As stated by Steve you need a few years if the brownie you speak of was marijuana. If it was anything else you may be toast. Alot of people have tried weed at some point but the fact that you did it AFTER you knew you wanted to be a cop is pretty rediculous.

We need to know what the brownie contained in order to pass judgment, and how long ago did you try it?
Secondly, I just graduated college and about 2.75 years ago I tried marijuana twice in college. Otherwise, I had a clean record with only a cell phone ticket. I was picked up by the second agency I went through (thrilled i didn't get the first one looking back). Anyways, the rule of thumb for most agencies seems to be two to, preferably, three years between usage time.
Is using marijuana a deal breaker? Not at all. It was a bad choice, and like I said, depends on when you did it, etc. I did it my sophomore year of college, twice, thats it.
Don't sweat it. People that tried marijuana once, such as yourself, is not a big deal compared to what a lot of other applicants have or have done.
Now, what did the brownie contain? How long until you graduate and plan on becoming a cop?
It only had to my knowledge some MJ in it. I remember going to bed pretty late that evening and waking up early the following morning and feeling completely normal. I really didn't even feel anything just a little buzz then I went to sleep because I was tired anyway. I would say that I start applying in like 2 years, maybe a little less or a little more than that. I have no criminal record, no tickets, I am building up my credit because I just recently got my own credit cards and I am saving up to get my own car. I pay all my bills early. I truly know that what I did was a very stupid move but I never intended or will ever do something like that dumb again. I am about 40 pounds overweight but I have recently lost 5 pounds just by cutting out soda and I am working on losing the rest so that I am peak physical shape. I really don't even talk to my friends who smoked pot that much anymore. I am also working on increasing my driving skills as well. Being a police officer I understand is a privilege and a lifestyle, it is really something I wish to achieve. Please don't think I am a bad guy, if I was I would say that I am but I think I am a good guy who has made a mistake. I want to serve my country and help and protect people and deter them from making the stupid decisions I have made. My father is a police officer and he would occasionally tell me his stories about being on the job and I even got the chance to meet some of the guys he works with and I get so pumped and excited whenever I am exposed to what my father does. I want to be a officer in the city that is my home, the city that I love. I am never to going to make that same mistake again, I made a promise to myself and to God that I won't ever make that same mistake again. Sorry for writing this long thing, I just hope you guys understand where I am coming from...

Secondly, relax. Its just once, you'll be fine. Just wait until you have about two years between that brownie and when you start to apply. Also, don't make an excuse like "it was allowed in country." Buck up, say you did it, no excuses.
Don't bother working on your driving. You can't work on your driving in regards to becoming a police officer. That is done on a track or airstrip with instructors, and it is not something you can accomplish or learn on the road.
Lastly, lose the extra weight and get into the best damn shape of your life. The very first morning of PT for my academy, we had one kid pass out cold, face first while standing, and we had another four or five that had to sit down due to the stress and physical activities. We didn't even work hard...
Be in the best shape, and keep your head on straight, and you are fine.

my unfortunate event occurred about 3 months ago. I'm 19 going to turn 20 very soon and after speaking with my parents (I did not tell them about my event or I'd be disowned) I found out I will most likely be applying for the NYPD soon after or soon before obtaining my masters degree. So I'll be about 22 I think by the time I get the ball rolling for my career. Do you guys still think I have a chance? Also I am curious, will the substance be present in my hair by that time I go for my test? I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me.

Your chances are fine. It really won't affect you very much, seeing as its one time.
However, it should be irrelevant if it is in your hair or not. You need to be entirely honest about this on your application, because it will be picked up on during some stage if you lie about it. You have no reason to lie, this is not a big deal, especially seeing as you will have a few years to put between you and doing this. Now relax, take a deep breath, and go do your thing! Apply when the time comes, and you'll be fine as long as you keep your nose clean.
Hey listen I just want to thank everybody for their responses and for helping me out here. So now I'm just gonna focus on losing weight and staying away from that crap, even if I lose a couple of friends in the process. Thanks again everyone.
