NYPD Physical and other tests advice,

Hey guys, I have passed my entrance exam with a very good score. I was requested to take the background / medical checks, but did not do so because I didn't have the 60 credits necessary to join the force now. But I will have them by the start of next summer.

I was hoping, someone can give me an input on the physical ability test the NYPD has. I have read / researched a lot about it. And was wondering if there was anywhere in the city I could go to train the obstacle course.

I think of myself as a medium fit person. I want to loose a few pounds, before I take the test. So please give me some pointers, and diet advice that can help me pass the test with flying colors.

One other small question, is the timing taken into consideration? Or is it simply a pass / fail? I understand that there is a time limit, but does it matter if I pass the test quicker or not? I am going to try for the best time possible.

Now to the oral / written psych tests. Now, I am very sure I will pass these, however I was curious as to what type of questions well be asked on these exams. Any pointers would be appreciated.

The best way to get the info you need is to read the entire Jan 2008 and July 2008 threads... they are long, but there is a ton of information on what you need and what to expect in the process. Trust me, its well worth the time.

As for info on the JST/Agility Test look for it on youtube. There is a short video where they take you through the JST and what obstacles you have to over come.

    Good luck!

If i was you start going to the gym, start working out lift some wieghts, get stronger, work on some cardio a little bit as well. Maybe running the 1.8 mile loop in central park is good for some starters who are looking to get thier stemina up for law enforcement.
Just have a clean background, like no felonies or drug problems or job firings, hopefully no mental problems, and for the medical just stay away from marijuana and other substances, and make sure that blood pressure is below 140/90 but I think soon the NYPD is going to want 120/80 as a requierment starting next year!

First of all I got screened for D.E.P. Police Officer and the b/p requirement is still 140/90 (under - good, above - problem). I also have asthma and I rarely run, however I do walk a lot (I go for about a half-hour to 2 hour walks each night depending on the weather conditions). Is it necessary to run for this job? I also got fired from 1 (maybe 2) jobs - how much is that going to hurt me?

    Plan on a medical DQ!

    and I rarely run,
Plan on failing the academy as the typical run is about 2-3 miles a day.

Is it necessary to run for this job?
Are you kidding? You have to run in the academy every day. Then you have to run 1.5 miles to pass teh state fitness standard within a certain time limit. Then you have to run to help other cops, citizens and chase perps every day. If you can't run as a rookie, you can forget about the job.

I also got fired from 1 (maybe 2) jobs - how much is that going to hurt me?
    A lot...plan on a oral psych DQ.

Add in you are overweight and lack of basic investigative skills...you may want to consider a different job.

Other than this thread being 3 YEARS old...and the fact that if you can't run and do it well ....you are finished. No credit is giving for " trying " or for someone who walks a lot.

Are you serious? And you wanna be a cop? Don't quit your day job.

No biggie, the guy that asked the last question about not having to run posted his yesterday. You were responding to him, not the original OP. That was a timely question/answer even if the thread is old.

Thanks for the honest feedback. Do the same rules/conditions still apply for the Traffic Enforcement Agent? Between the 3 exams I took (D.E.P. Environmental Officer, Police Officer and Traffic Enforcement Agent), I like the Traffic Enforcement Agent the most.

Traffic agenst are not cops. They write parking tickets. And there is no requirement other than you stand and breathe. They prefer you don't have a brain.

If you like this the best, you were never meant to have a badge and gun.
