    Finances

Hello! I have a question about finances. I made stupid decisons about money awhile back. Since then I have paid my bills off and have turned over a new leaf. If I continue to be responsible for the next two years until I apply, will the board consider the change and look past the mistakes?? Thanks, Brickhead:;)

It depends on your age, what you have done since, and how bad your previous situation was/is.

If you lost it all due to gambling... drugs.. or buying everything that goes fast on land and sea... then you will probably have problems.

If you lost it all due to having a child, a divorce, family member(s) in need of assistance, etc.. then its an explainable thing that happened, from which you recovered from it.

Because I believe it shows responsibility on behalf of the person. If they aren't good with their own money, what makes one think that they will make a good cop, a position that requires a ton of responsibility.

Responsibility is the biggest reason. Person who has money problems = equals a person that might say, take a bribe to turn the blind eye... or might keep 10k from that drug bust... money not making its way to evidence... just a few examples.

I always beleived that the people who intervied you probably had some of the same problems you have, when they were younger, but because times have changed, so does responsability, so I guess this is exactly what they are looking at, Just be honest, they made mistakes too.

I think some of the finace aspect goes too far. One application asked me to list and VERIFY my bank statement, cash on hand, property values, stocks and bonds, personal belongings, motor vehicle ,amount owed to credit card, student loan, personal loans, etc. I mean, COME ON!!

They wanted to know about every nickle and dime that's passed through my hands in the past year. I'm 23,just graduated from college, and am living with my parents. Maybe I'll just find a way to write "DEAD BROKE" on the application. How many ways can you tell them you have nothing, live paycheck to paycheck, and are in debt up to your *** due to paying for the very expensive piece of paper I get to hang on my wall after spending 5 years going to school for the same thing as half the free world.

Having money problems should not dq you. Having debts you did not own up to and take care of like a responsible adult will.
And your whiney *** crybaby excuse would be....

I understand in some since how this matters, In some since i dont.
for instance. Husband works as the sheriff department and it does not pay crap! lol. We work hard for what we have and live paychack to paycheck. Due to a drunk driving hitting us we lost everything and had to file bankruptcy last year. Since then we have paid all bills ontime ( except some medical which can be very costly due to having a disable child) But my car loan does not go on my credit :( sucks! So there is nothign to show we have better credit since then.Even though we pay all bills on time
sometimes people just have a hard time :( I would hate to think this would be held against Skip

That is a lil' more history then the sverage person that is irresponsible and buries themselves in debt.

Managing money demonstrates maturity and responsibility.

Why should a PD not know everything about your finances? They are going to dump 60-70k training you.
