Do they ask for all email addresses and sn's for BI?

Exactly as the title asks, do they ask for all email addresses and sn's for BI? I've been using the same main sn and email address (not this one ;)) since I first got online back in 2000. 8years of posts is bound to turn something up. I'm not saying I have anything of real importance to hide, but I've done some things in the past I'd feel a bit uneasy about if they were to find it. Years ago, beginning at 13 years old, I've posted immaturely in some forums, visited and requested information from "hacking" websites, visited and posted on p2p websites, and may have posted porn related comments but I'm not sure about that. It was a while ago. Bottom line is I've said some things, and went to websites in the past that I regret. However, it's nothing like child pornography, or "how to grow marijuana without the PSP finding out" websites. I've also used my email address to request ANY information, and to apply to ANY board over the past 8 years. Do they usually request this information? Specifically for the PA state police. Should I start fresh with a new one for a year or so to be safe? :D Thanks

If you have a myspace or a facebook I wouldn't be surprised if your BI takes a look through them.

I had some posts on another forum that were brought up by an investigator. It had nothing to do with the BI, but it was still brought up just the same.

The internet's a pretty small place.

If you've done some questionable acts as a juvenile, be upfront with it (seriously, who hasn't?). Get it off your chest, and be done with it. Nothing you specified would be illegal or automatically disqualifying (unless you used any of that hacker know-how), and if a sizable amount of time has passed since then, probably no big deal.

However, I doubt very seriously that unless you're involved in a major criminal investigation, a police agency isn't going to thorougly research all your email accounts or online usernames. Facebook and myspace, sure, but the internet is to vast to research any and all sites, posts and blogs. Just too time-consuming.

They search through your MySpace and Facebook. Private or not, they will get access to it somehow.

I thought the hot girl really thought I was interesting...

    Darn...:( :p

Just be upfront about everything and you should be ok.

Privacy settings don't work on a subpoena. ;)

Well, I had my background interview two days ago. The interview was just preliminary, making sure all my information was correct and also to get an idea of my personality. This interview was just scratching the surface, but he already knew my presence on the web in regards to 'screen names' and such.

Don't be surprised as to what they can divulge. I honestly believe, if he wanted to, he could find out what I had for dinner on May 23, 1987.;). Basically, all I'm saying is, if you have any skeletons in your closet let them be known initially. If the BI has to find out on his own it would not be in your favor.

    Good Luck, Boss

And yes, they will find out about how you were going to "employ only 1 countermeasure and pass" the polygraph.

Can't get a subpoena for a BI, BUT an agency could make it a requirement to allow them to see whats on your myspace/facebook account as part of a hiring process/BI.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Bump since most people missed this. You are clever my friend, and that was indeed my post. Caught me offguard, but still gave me a bit of a chuckle After hearing about the polygraph exam and how inaccurate they CAN be, I became quite paranoid, mainly due to the a certain anti-polygraph website that claims honest people regularly fail polygraphs. While I still believe that may be true, I believe nervousness plays a huge role on whether you pass or fail regardless of honesty or dishonesty. Now that I feel like I know at least partially what to expect, I'm much more confident as far as the poly goes. Even in that post I never said I was hiding anything ;)

We don't use subpoenas on background checks, either. You either give us permission to look at anything we want, or your background investigation is over.

Using countermeasures is the dumbest thing you can do... you WILL get cought, unless you were trained by the CIA. All that garbage you can buy online instructing you how to "beat" the poly is pure filth. Don't waste your money. The best way to beat the polygraph is to tell the truth, or believe your own lies... but delusional people don't really make the best cops.

Go in there, be confident with your answers, and go home happy.

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet either.

I'm not a fan of using the polygraph for hiring, not just because honest people fail, but a decent socio or pyschopath can pass one hands down. You have to feel some guilt to fail, they never do about anything. Also, I think it can tend to make a BI lazy. We catch a lot of bad eggs by good old fashioned foot work.

People rarely fail because they're nervous, they fail because they're hiding something that may or may not be relevant to the question. Asked if you ever stole from an employer, you might say no and fail. The reason being you did steal a notebook from a teacher in the 6th grade and you subconsciously connect the two. That's why the pre interview is so important and you need to be upfront with anything you're worried about.

We don't use a polygraph except for criminal investigations. And the operater goes over the questions with the examinee before the test to see if there is going to be a problem. If the operator starts asking you questions cold, the chances are you might show deceptive.

But the chances of you screwing it up by trying countermeasures is high. No matter what you come up with, don't think the operator hasn't encountered it. I've met few, if any people who are as clever as they think they are.;)
