    Age and Life Experience ?

    Here is my story.

I had my first child during the middle part of my senior year in high school. I was married a month later. I had just turned 18 when all of this happened. Now I am 20 and almost have an associates degree in business. Also, I have another child due in September. I am still married to the same women and things are going good. My credit is not great but that is only because I don't have much on my credit report, only a house and two vehicles. I am always on time with my payments and such.

I am going to apply for the Texas Trooper Academy when I have my degree. I will be 21 when I apply. How do they judge people like this? I can see where they would not like it, but I can also see where they would like it. Will this hurt my chances of getting accepted?

It depends on a number of things. I'm sure you have read the requirements for the department. If you think you have what it takes, go for it. It doesn't hurt to try, but I really hope you want and know what you are trying to get into. Good luck.

I have wanted to be a game warden or a trooper since I was 14. My grandfather was a trooper and wore his gold watch until he died. I know it will be tough to get accepted and even harder once I get there, if I ever get accepted. That is one of the reasons why I got a degree in business. Once I have my degree I will meet all of the requirements to at least qualify. I just want to know how they will look at person in my situation. If I ever make it there it will all be worth it. I can hardly sleep at night just thinking about how close I am to being able to qualify for the academy.

Better than 21, living in moms basement and fresh out of college with no experience other than having to order food if the parents are away for a night ;)

The important thing is that you are showing that you are responsible, taking care of your child and handling your bills. I would say that at your age you are doing good considering your circumstances. There are many intangibles when applying for this job, and many people are competing against you. Make yourself stand out, prepare physically, and mentally. It all comes down to how bad do you want it? Be prepared that you may get turned down on your first try, but good luck to you.

From what you've told us, I'd say you are showing that you accept your responsibilities and obligations and are willing to do what it necessary to fulfill them. There are agencies that will tell you to gain some life experience and come back, and there are some that won't. And hey, if the Troopers tell you that, find a smaller agency to get your foot in the door. Get some experience, keep doing what you're doing, and try again after a bit.
