    Post My Backround Check

    Hey everyone,
I recently took the civil service test in my county and scored an 85, which I am told is pretty decent. I've wanted to be an officer for years now and I was wondering if you LEO's could give me some advice and let me know how attractive I would be to your department.
I have a Regents diploma from my High School. Got mostly B's and stayed out of trouble for the most part. The couple suspensions/ detentions I received that I can recall were due to the fact that I felt the need to jump into every fight I saw and break it up. I didn't punch everyone out mind you, just pulled people off each other and restrained one or two when they tried to start with me. Understandably, my school has no tolerance for fighting, but unfortunately since I became involved I was reprimanded several times.
Almost immediately following graduation, my mother's boyfriend kicked me out of the house, due to the fact that "I wasn't his kid and why should he have to put up with me". I packed my things and couch hopped for a couple weeks before finding a studio apartment. Several months later I rented a two bedroom with my buddy and thats where I've stayed to this day.
For the past year and a half I've been working two jobs to support myself and pay my outrageous car insurance premium. I am a customer electronics sales consultant at Sears during the day and a waiter at a restaurant by night. In my spare time I go to the gym, and ride with an officer one or two nights a week at my town's PD. The officer recommended that I apply for the dispatch position that is currently open. My application is almost completed and I am handing it in in a day or so. This is apparently a foot in the door to working for the department according to her.
At 19 now, I have to wait a little less than a year to hopefully start receiving letters/ phone calls from departments in the county. The negative records I have are that I was brought up on a trespass charge, which was lowered to a violation and I paid a fine, and a criminal mischief charge which was ACD'd. Currently I have no criminal record and its STAYING that way, I realized very quickly after the mischief charge that it was indeed time to grow up. As far as my driving record is concerned, I have 4 points, both for failure to obey a traffic device.
This career is all I could ever ask for. Hopefully you all can give me some feedback and advice. Thanks!

If you can get a dispatch job offered, take it. It will be a good way to get your foot in the door and a good experience. You can get a few years in and maybe they'll hire you on full time there.

I don't know how the competition is up there, but no agency around here would even look at you because of your age and lack of any real qualifications.

You're competing against people with college and military experience, in addition to those who are much older than you and have more life experience. To be honest, nobody cares what kind of diploma you got from high school. As I said, there are plenty of people with four year college degrees applying for these jobs.

I would look at the dispatch job. Unless there are very very few applicants for every open position, I would say that your chances of getting hired for a LEO position would be slim to none based on your lack of life experience alone.

I had one suspention in school, don't worry about it, on most the applications I have filled out it asks you to FULLY explain ALL suspentions/disiplinary action taken toward you. If you are able to articulate that you were trying to end fights, I don't think they will hold it against you.

Yeah, I'll have no problem explaining my suspensions then. As for competition wise, in my area it seems that they hire many of the guys I used to go to school with almost right out of high school. At least the sheriff's department does. But if that doesn't happen for me then hopefully the dispatch position works out in my favor:confused:

Have you spoken with your high school acquaintances? Not to rain on your parade, but it is possible that their young hiring age may not be for a good reason......as in, they might be terrible to work for. Hopefully that's not the case, but you probably want to consider the possibility. Just an observation...my 2 cents. Good luck!

Scoring an 85 on the civil service test in my book carries no weight over not being able to spell "backround" properly. ;)

Most of the guys that get hiored by your coutn PD are NOT full time Officers. They are called TAC deputies and most of them are lucky if they work 8 hours a week.

Lol, backround is spelled background, I realize that, just a typo come on let's not go too hard on me. As for your comment Roger, I'd have no problem working the eight hours a week. Its a start:D I never specified that I expected a full time position, especially with my age and lack of experience and unfortunately no college yet. Hopefully I'll be taking some courses part time in the fall, it'd be too hard to pay the bills and go full time, otherwise I would.

Thanks, Roger. I've always been this way, but my previous issue with this site, not you namely, is that you LEO's are very to the point, and didn't respond with candy-coated warm and fuzzy answers, and thats the way it should be. Originally thats not what I wanted to hear, but instead of getting upset I realized that I should learn from what you told me and stop whining about it. Plus riding with this officer lately has opened up my eyes to the real world and the fact that it is indeed time to grow up.

I've also learned to properly conjugate and capitalize my posts:D
