    Heard it through the grapevine

I was wondering how confidential the personal history/background information is once I turn it over to the department? There are a few things in my history that I would really rather not have shared with a family friend (who I respect very much) and who works in a different, but nearby, police department. I don't think the history is DQ-worthy but if my family friend called the department and asked "How is he doing in the process?" and the BI said "Take a look at this..." I'd be mortified.
Maybe I'm worried about nothing, but I know how tight-knit the community is. Thanks in advance.

It's between the department and you.

If it's not DQ worthy it can't be that bad, what did you do?

Generally if there is something in your background you are so embarassed about that someone could blackmail you with that information, giant red flags are raised. Once you get into Law Enforcement, you're an open book. Depending on local laws, their investigation may also be of public record, similar to that of a criminal investigation.

If you could possibly be "mortified" about someone finding out something in your BI, and it's not DQ worthy, I'd be interested just to know what that could possibly be.

But then again, I seriously doubt you're gonna give us any insight. I'm now deeply intrigued. :D

EDIT: Now I realize that it could also be moral or ethical in nature. For instance, adultery and the like. Not a crime in most areas, but certainly something you wouldn't want being brought out to a family member, who is LE no less, during a background investigation.

adultery is a crime in NY too. I don't know what kind of an arrest I'd add it too w/o it being possibly offensive to the victim.
    DONLON
I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.

Nothing too serious. Just a conservative family and a distant past.
    Thank you very much.
