Last night I walked across the stage and received my diploma from the Academy. The 26 weeks were pure hell, and we endured a lot. I'll be reporting to the PD on Monday morning at 0700.
I remember when I first came here when I was in the hiring process. The advice I received was great and helped me a lot. As I tested and passed the tests, I thought I had accomplished something, and I had, however small. When I got hired I thought I was "in." Little did I realize that this was only the first step.
My first day of the Academy changed my perspective. I was a recruit, not a police officer. I had to make it past these guys before I could go to work.
Now that I am looking at starting I am well aware that I have a lot to learn. I have more to learn now and more things to worry about than I did during testing or the Academy.
I will be submitting my paperwork to get verified next week, and look forward to seeing what's behind the mysterious "Restricted" section. Again, I thank you all who have contributed to my accomplishment.
Finally, I will leave some words of advice for those who are headed down the same path while it is fresh on my mind. Stay determined, never give up. If you will quit early on, you will quit in the field, where it matters most. If this is what you want, nothing can stop you from getting it. That is, unless your past haunts you, and in that case, there are other ways to serve the public.
Our keynote speaker for graduation was Chief Teresa Chambers, and for those of you that know her, know she is a powerful speaker. She spoke on ethics, and reminded us not to tarnish our badges, because no amount of Brasso can get rid of that.
Today I am proud to be called a Police Officer.
