In AZ your chances would be toast, including as a Reserve.

You cannot have used marijuana, other than for experimentation, within the past three years and no hard drugs within the past seven. Check with HPD for the standards for your state; I tried to find Hawaii's POST regualtions but am not interested enough to search all the possibilities. This means you would not even be considered until 23 at the earliest. Using shrooms is a pretty quick dq, as well, regardless of how many times.

and two years ago really doesn't count as "in my earlier years", now does it?

I too am from Hawaii and am planning to apply for the Honolulu Police Department after i graduate from college in a couple years. I have no criminal background, no past drug use, a stable work history and excellent credit history.

I have spoken with alot of officers and have some friends who work with HPD. For your prior drug use, its an automatic DQ. HPD is not "lax". for instance, one of my coworkers was applying to HPD and made it all the way to the BI. hes a straight guy, no prior drug use, very good work history, good credit background. 4 years back, he got caught participating in a fight. once HPD caught that, they DQ'ed him.

And the hiring process is not any more different that the mainland. The physical fitness tests and the length of the hiring process may be different, but the hiring process as a whole is the same.

Hard drug use and aspiring to be a police officer is like working in porn and aspiring to be a priest.

    Howizit hawaii,

I lived in the islands for almost 8 years. Up in the Pupukea area behind Waimea Falls (remember the H-4 incident?).

I was up to the academy acceptance (admin day the week prior to class start) stage when I politely declined. I had worked very closely with HPD SWAT and Crisis Intervention during all the major incidents between 1996 and 2000.

Bro, you are right about the department being Semi-Lax regarding hiring of locals to the force considering minor drug use. It's the Islands for hecks sake:rolleyes:. But from what I remember during my BI, they do not allow any hard drug use AT ALL. You may want to verify that policy with a recruiter though.

The only thing I could recommend besides what everyone else here already has, YOU need to do some serious community service work. Volunteer for one of the hundreds of programs there on the island you live. Some of them even allow limited island hopping to accomplish the mission.

I find it kinda hard to believe you don't have some kinda juvi record to live down also. Between the Island PD's and the Hawaii Sheriff's department, they were continuosly doing some kinda drug ops. Many times rounding up parties and users to clean up an area.

Good Luck to ya Dude. Stop being so defensive towards the LEOs on this board. All the advise is good and you need to take it in. No EXCUSES for your recent (anything less than 2 years is recent in LE work). Heck, I got t-shirts older than you.:D
