    Backround check question...

    I've been reading this site for the last couple of days to see if I could find some answers to a question I have... some threads helped, but I'm still a little unsure. My backround is clean, no drug use ever, no arrests, a couple of speeding tickets 5 years ago, and one accident in which I was not at fault. The only thing that worries me is my work history. In the last 8 years, I've had approximately 13 jobs, and I've been terminated from at least 10 of them all for the same reason: no-call/no-show. Is this really going to be a big deal or nothing to worry about? I'm starting to wonder if I should even take the intial written exam. :confused:

    How old are you?

    What is your explanation for not calling and/or not showing up?

    When was the last time this happened?

    Can you demonstrate stable employment in the last few years?

    ...not quite sure if your answers matter, considering you claim it has happened no less than 10 times in the last 8 years.

    Yes, that will be a big deal.

    A police department that hires you will spend a lot of time and money training and equipping you. They will expect you to be there when you are scheduled.

    You have shown a history of not going to work when you don't feel like it, and that is unacceptable in a public safety field.

    I recommend at LEAST five years of stable job history before you apply.

    We depend on people to show up when they're scheduled. To fail to do so puts the rest of the shift at a disadvantage, because now they have to cover your area as well as their own.

    In addition, your work history progressed to the point that you had to be terminated. Ten times... You had to know that several "no call, no shows" would not be a good thing, but instead of stepping up and saying, "You know what? I just can't meet the obligations that this job requires right now. I need to resign," you did nothing instead, forcing the employer to take action.

    In all honesty, your application would probably get a cursory look here before being filed in the "no go" section.

    I'm 25. For the majority of those terminations, I was a full-time college student and didn't really care about the jobs I held since they weren't relevant to my goal--I am not justifying my actions though. I'd end up sleeping in on a Saturday, getting terminated, and finding another job... rinse, and repeat. The last time this happened was last year. I've only been at my new job for under a month, so no-go on being able to demonstrate stable employment. I'm trying to turn over a new leaf... but yeah I'm starting to think becoming a cop is not going to happen now.

    Well you should have cared because 10 firings is a HUGE deal. I know plenty of guys who have had a hard time finding a job for being fired once.

    10 is a pattern of poor behavior. Whether you cared about those jobs or not you not showing up impacted someone else. Shows selfishness for one and for a second am I supposed to rely on you to show up for your shift coverage?

    I understand exactly what you mean. It was stupid of me to think I could become a cop

    Honestly, it sounds to me like you have emotional and/or psychological disabilities to contend with more than just irresponsible conduct.

    Because I wasn't planning on leaving any of the jobs I was terminated from. Call it whatever you'd like, but in my late teens I was very cavalier about working and wanted to focus on college--I had no idea of the ramifications it would have later on in my life; you live and you learn.

    I JUST watched two different people get rejected at our agency for this EXACT reason. They had either just walked out of previous jobs or didn't show up, or they got fired for it. And they didn't have TEN under their belts! We don't want people working for us with a history like that.

    You MUST be dependable in this line of work. Our lives depend on it. So yes, it's an ENORMOUS deal.
