Question Where to live???- NYPD MOS Please

I am looking to make the move to NYC to join the NYPD. My question is, in your opinion, where is the best place for a rookie cop to live? I would love to hear about some of your experiences.

Also, what is reasonable to pay for an apartment and what was your travel time to get to the academy and later your command.

Living alone, you will not be able to have any semblance of a quality life in NYC until top pay at least. Keep this in mind if you are really that determined.

Your best bet is to share an apartment with some other people. If you want the best chance of a short commute, you are better off in Brooklyn or the Bronx (since more people go to these areas out of the academy).

I'd be curious on some of the verified's responses aswell. I might take the NYPD route in a few years.

Then again, I kinda like where I am right now. Who knows! :p

Unless you get 3 or 4 roommates, you're not living anywhere decent for at least a couple of years. I honestly think that due to the salary and cost of living, it might not be feasible to move to NY just to become a cop.

NYC seems to have an attractive retirement plan. 50% after 20 years of service sounds pretty good to me. Heck, you can't even get that in the military anymore. Stupid Redux program puts you at 40% when you hit twenty years.

My ideal department will offer a non-contributory pension of at least 50% high-three after twenty years of service. I wanted to go federal as a GS-0083 series, but I'm not going federal anything if it's not a 12d position or non-competitive to GS-12.

I'll probably end up working for the feds anyway. I just like the idea of having mobility within the government.

The outer boroughs (queens, bk, bronx) or upstate (westchester, rockland) will be your cheapest most likely, with the better commutes (depending on where you get assigned). You'll most likely need a roommate though.

I live with my girlfriend in a good sized apartment in Queens. I also saved a lot of money before I moved here and all the savings are spent and I started taking on a small amount of debt just to get through the academy. Now that I am out of the academy and working I am starting to pay off the debt and break even again...but not saving as of yet. It is rough no matter where you live on the salary we make, thats just the nature of the situation in the NYPD right now.

You can find cheaper apartments in the counties to the north: Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange. If you find something near a Metro North train station - the NYPD will issue you a train pass. The commute is a little longer but you will notice a big difference in the cost of living a little farther upstate compared to NYC. As mentioned above, you won't be making much money, so you'll probably want/need roommates.

Some of the places that I can think of are not far from major Subways #4 & D Train, both in the Woodlawn & Riverdale sections of the Bronx. Both Border Yonkers to the North. I may be mistaken but I think there is a Policy that "ROOKIES" have to live in the City for the 1st couple of years. There are a few places in Queens & Brooklyn the rents may be a little more. But I agree with the others you may want to find a room-mate for the 1st year or 2. Again look for a major subway to take you to the Academy... Happy House Hunting!!!!!

You must live in "SWORN PO".
Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Nassau, Putnam
Other (5 boroughs/counties that make up NYC)

I live in Orange @ West Point, across the river from the Metro North station.

Vengeance, the train pass, is it given to recruits in the academy or do they hold off on that until I graduate?
